P38A Highest mileage P38? How is it holding up?

I was just curious and did a quick search. Seems like the last time it was asked here was 10 years ago. So with the decade coming to an end; what kinda life is everyone seeing out of their rigs? Hoping to get first hand ownership experience and not for sale ads that you have seen since we wont know much history on those. So Ill go first..

1998 Callaway HSE
Engine: 4.6 GEMS
Mileage: 190K miles
Usage: Off-road and Overland
Current annoyance(if any): Rear axles "click click" when backing up and turning.
 
1999 2.5td, DHSE. Tuned.
220.000mls, clicky back axle, headlining.
Offroading, not hard core!
Dragging cars and everyday usage including holiday jaunts.
In the last fthree years,
General grabber at3's 40.000mls on them.
Hankook at2's.
All four Dunlop bags.
A series of terrafirma shocks standard.
New front bumper. Oink.
New rad, hot stuff.
Electric fan conversion with adjustable thermostat.
New o rings in the EAS valve block.
Front height sensors.
Disks and pads all round.
Middle exhaust box.
Gearbox rad.
Intercooler rewelded.
Oil cooler pipes.
300L of various oils...... Errr maybe.
Intank fuel pump VDO. No hole in floor!!
Fip seals.
No4 injector.
A couple of second hand genuine relays.
Two ongoing refurbed compressors.
Compressor air intake moved to cabin. No humidity!
Axle ball joints and seals.
Drag link and track rod bar.
Poly roll bar bushes.
Datatek refurbed EAS driverpak.
Wipers..
Door latch pas/rear.
Key fob.
Rear brake lines in copper and all rear rubber lines.
Fuel return pipe.
Bosch glow plugs.
Lots of spit, swearing and weekends.
Errrrr... Thinking.
Alternator.
Water pump and all pulleys.
Thermostat and two yearly antifreeze.
Brake sphère.
Brake fluid 2x in ownership.
Are we there yet......

LOL niiice...Im right there with you! Glad Im not the only one that has had to replace a "few" parts.. Only thing Im still considering is extended SS brake lines.
 
I have 256,000 miles on my 1999 2.5DSE.
She is showing her age pretty badly tbh, a lot of it is neglect on my behalf, got myself into financial difficulties a few years back and my old bus suffered for it.

I am not sure she'll make it to 300,000 without me taking her off the road and going to town. Unfortunately as my daily driver, that isn't happening any time soon.

Seems like the diesels have no problem making it past 250K. Best of luck to you on 300K

we all get into crap unfortunately but your here to tell the tail and still driving your bus :cool: 300.000mls here we come:D
 
In my opinion, the end of the traditional chassis and simple electronics was the demise of longevity. So much on newer vehicles are appliance based, sealed for life and unfixable, either by price or technical ability of home mechanics.
Series landys, classic and p38 range rovers and early discos have more chance of gaining high miles if time and effort is put into maintenance vs fixing breakdowns

I agree wholeheartedly.
A ten year economical lifespan is what they are after and the 38' was the last real RR in my honesty opinion... Not biased....
