high tenp engine oil

in my 1975 rr i get a high temp reading (very close to the red zone) while the colant temp is nornmal. i was playing with the ingnition timming, I fix this at 12 before. keep in mind that i live at 12000 feets over the sea level and the distributor is a HEI (accel). My 1987 rr is set at 10 degrees before and runs fine.
please somebody knows the cause of the high oil temp reading??

Yes. every day, i drive a 20Km hill from 7600 feet to 9200 fet over the sea level at 60KM/h and i get the hot oil temp reading. the oil I use is w20/50

Ignition timing is too far advanced for the 3.5 V8 should be somewhere between 6 and 8 degrees at tickover with vacuum disconnected.

I think what Druim was asking was, are you sure that the oil is hot and it's not just a faulty sender or gauge?

adjust ign timing to 8..

or if you like the advanced timing cos of your alitutude...

add oil cooler..and run very good oil..ie mobile 1 10-60w.(£50 nfor 5 litres)

BUT first check if oil is actually hot..gauge may be fecked..
