aha, under the elbow should be 2 resonators, or expansion chambers, guess these fallen fallen off or otherwise got damaged and the holes bunged up

Interesting. Do you have any idea what the purpose of the resonators is? I wonder if I should try and get hold of some? I had a look in the Range Rover workshop manual and can't find any reference to them.

thats a big question, lots of sources of info, but itstillruns gives a good overview.
i'm guessing it runs just fine as it is and I can't imagine any possible way it could affect oil consumption

Very interesting, thanks for the link. I want a resonator now, I don't suppose anybody has a spare one lying around do they? That probably explains why my car is louder than it should be.

Air flow can do strange things. I have ordered a replacement pipe with the resonators attached. Another weekend working on cars.

When mine had a single point LPG system on it, the old girl backfired and blew the intake trunk apart!

It was repaired with tape and the chambers blanked off!

Mine is a Hybrid it Burns both Gas and Oil

Yes, but it's a Prins VSI set up and is running as sweet as a nut (touch wood), running cost is about 13p/mile in gas and another 1.5p/mile in oil.
