I can't see the point of having an attached winch. When I did a trip across Morocco we were in a group of five vehicles. When one got stuck one of the other vehicles towed them out. If your green lanning I think it would be safer not to go alone and its more fun in a group. A chain saw I have found more useful to remove fallen trees. The one time I have been stuck was in the middle of a field and a winch would not get me out as there was nowhere to anchor it to. The ground was very wet and boggy. The Defender was bogged down right up to the axles. A high lift would have been useless also. I had to get a farmer to tow me out. I suppose it depends how seriously you want to off road and to my mind if your getting serious then being in a group would be safer and more fun. Chances are you can have a laugh at the others getting stuck.

I can't see the point of having an attached winch. .

Me neither, never had one in 30 years of landrover use.
Always seemed to me a lot of weight in just the wrong place, for something you might use a few times a year, and as above, plenty of other methods.

As you say, extreme situations you should never really be on your own, so tows etc, are viable option.

Obviously I would make an exception in the case of people wishing to compete in winch challenges, etc. :D

I bought my jackall (hi lift) from machine mart many years ago. It's a good tool in the collection and has been used many times for all sorts of different jobs. I chucked it in the boot today in case my trailer got a puncture. I raised my shed up on flagstones with it a couple if months ago. I used it with a strap to pop out a couple of timber strainer / gate posts recently too. Comes in handy

I was tempted to get one, but then came across all the issues, both with mounting it and using it, and I don't think I will bother to be honest, I will
Probably just stick with the bottle jack and get some decent axle stands
