It would be a big help to know the model, year and engine in it.

It would also help to describe what happened when the engine "shut off".

Its a 2002 Landrover freelander 1 V6 petrol . I was on my way home when i pressed on the gas pedal I heard a noise coming from the engine then the LR stopped and pulled over. Tried turning it back on and didnt want to start. I took it to MIDAS and they told me that they checked all the sensors and that it was probable that I might need to repair the whole engine. I looked it up and its very costy I dont know what to do.

It sounds like it could be a broken cam belt, but and half reasonable auto shop would diagnose that.

If it is a broken cam belt it would need new cam belts (3 of them), heads off to check valves and pistons (not an easy job) and possible some new valves and maybe a piston or two and maybe liners. Normal way of fixing a bad case of that would be to find another used engine, fit new cam belts etc. and fit that.

At the other end of the scale, it could just be a camshaft or crankshaft position sensor.

You really need to get a good mechanic that you can trust to have a look at it.

They diagnosed the LR freelander today they said the rear cylinders were decompressed. They checked all the sensors already no problem there.

Then most likely the cam belt for the rear cylinders has broken or the cam or timing drive for those cylinders has failed.

You were right . Now my next question is what type of tool is needed to properly adjust the timing drive. ? ? Is there a special tool?

There are special tools, but it is not hard to do it without them. Plenty of good advice on here.

So, has the cam belt broken? What other damage has it done?

How do you do it without them? Yeah the cam is broken and it went on to damage 14 valves had to replace those as well
