Please read this list and give me a honest opinion on what this Series 3 is worth please ,


Series 2a 1968 TAX EXEMPT SWB hard top Diesel land rover.

Taken 18 months to build and restore !!

Comes with 12 months MOT and 12 month TAX !!!
1968 G reg 86.000 miles !!

Series 3 bulk head fitted (perfect condition painted proir to fitting)
Series 3 doors ,screen,bonnet
90 Diffs front and rear
New chassis waxol inside and out ,
2.5 N/A DIESEL engine good condition no smoke
New cambelt 2 weeks ago
New alternator
New exhaust system
New water pump
Rocker and sump gaskets renewed

Gearbox is perfect selects every gear smoothly transter and fwd all ok

Full brake overhall ( new drums,shoes,cylinders, hoses,pipes )
New swivels,axle seals
New wheel bearings fitted (all wheels)
New alternator
Optima battery

Refubished 16 inch white 8 spoke wheels BRAND NEW 235/85 TYRES

New electrics thoughout including new headlights,
New indicators, brake lights, side light.
Front spots
Rear work lights
Cooling fan
Heater

90 front end,
Bonnet and wings both with CHEQ PLATE
90 Grill and surround
Brand new A bar fitted

I have never seen a landy go for a fiver or tenner they are worth more in scrap than that after all my time and effort i know is worth more than a fiver or tenner

touchy aren't ya...

Its a very fine line still calling that a 2a. I think it would need a vosa inspection as it doesn't retain enough points to warrant keeping the registration mark. That said if you get away with the chassis you will be some way towards it. I think it should be given a Q plate, therefore the added value of tax exempt may not be there. It will also be slightly more difficult to insure which will reduce the appeal, but not necessarily the value.

Its not really one for us series boys and girls, but they do have a value. Check out this one on the bay on a Q plate.

You'd get between 1500 and 2k for it I expect, its worth what someone will pay for it and you might get some cash happy newbie off roader who will give you approaching 2500 for it. Some people would just list it as you have, but if it was me I'd be careful to make sure you describe it accurately or ensure you are the right side of the modified vehicle rules before you sell it then someone comes after you for misdescription etc.

I have change engine , bulkhead, and front end would this really stop it being tax exempt ???
The axles suspension brakes etc are all orginal they have just been renewed

Would changing these 3 parts stop it from being tax exempt ??

There's quite a difference between people asking for advice on how to fix their Landys and people asking for advice on how much to sell them for. You built it, you work it out.

If you've done all that just to sell it perhaps you should have given this some thought before you started.

As has been said, it's worth what someone will pay for it. Personally I think you've taken a good looking motor and made it ugly, and that's without even seeing a picture.

If this was more just a sneaky way of posting a for sale ad': Banner, top of the page - 'For Sale' section.

Hi MJG,

The biggest problem with landrovers is also their biggest advantage... They're probably the easiest modified vehicle on the market in the UK. This would be no problem at all if it were straightforward to obtain insurance on a highly modified vehicle - it is possible, but so many people don't bother, and it can be stunningly expensive depending on the actual modifications involved, your age, intended use of the vehicle, and location. Some insurers look favourably on modifications - my insurer put no loading on my premium for the overdrive, uprated brakes (six-cyl drums), later seats, bigger wheels and tyres (235/85x16 on FC rims), and are only loading me £35 for the 200Tdi when it finally goes in. They have, however said I'd need an engineers report for a power steering conversion and would either accept or decline my business on the strength of it.

The DVLA also have rules for modifications. You can get away with loads if they are done gradually over a long period of time. You can graft on home brewed steering and suspension and do all sorts of stuff, and I know loads of people who have done just that with no problems... But, they have firm guidelines that state that major modifications done on chassis and suspension require the vehicle to be submitted for an SVA test, much like a kit-car. This normally results in them issuing a new chassis number and registration on a "Q" plate.

DVLA have a points system for retaining a vehicle's identity:
Original chassis or monocoque (or new, original specification) 5 points
Suspension 2 points
Axles (both of them) 2 points
Gearbox 2 points
Steering 2 points
engine 1 point

You need to retain a minimum of 8 points, 5 of which must come from the chassis/monocoque.

Using coils on a leaf sprung vehicle is going to mean either major chassis work, and an SVA, or a new chassis that is "not to manufacturers original specification"... and no 5 points an hence no original reg. On top of that, your spec means whichever way you look at it you're going to be in "Q" plate hybrid territory.

As long as you're happy with that there's no problem - but it is going to mean owning a vehicle could potentially be akward to insure and hard to sell on.

If you want all the refinements of a 90 with the look of a series 3 then there's nothing stopping you moving the radiator back on a 200tdi, using a series grille and bonnet, windscreen and hard-top (although you'd have to use a cut-down 109" hardtop as an 88" would be too short, and strictly speaking the smaller series 3 screen doesn't meet construction and use regulations for driver vision and wiper swept area). A 300 tdi is mounted too far forward to allow you to do the same thing. This would simply be a cosmetic modification and wouldn't affect the status of the vehicle - you could keep all the standard bits to put it back if you wanted to.

Loads of people seem to be getting away with slapping the number plate and chassis number from an old tax-exempt scrapper on their 90 or 110, but personally the risks outweigh the benefits in my opinion!

That sums it up doesn't it, I was going to post the same info

You are allowed to replace parts such as chassis and shell with a replacement part direct from the manufacturer, but the question will be whether a galvanised / replacement chassis is allowable in this respect. Generally if the chassis was a like for like ie there is no modification / changes on a good day I think it would be looked favourably upon and you would get away without an SVA. You'd be better getting up to date info though.

Here is the DVLA site, I am not sure they are clear on whether the chassis has to be used to qualify for the points

Either way I think you are well into modified vehicle territory and an SVA will give it a reg date of whether you pass the sva which will mean its not exempt from tax anymore.

So ya can take of the dodgy axles of a series and put disco ones on with disc brakes and not loose a point?
Replace the front end with a defender on and not loose a point?
put a coils sprung chassis on and not loose a point???
Put a tdi engine in ???
a lt77 box and not loose a point??


They are ALL made by landrover.

In order to retain the original registration mark:
Cars and Car-Derived Vans must use:
The original unmodified chassis or unaltered bodyshell (i.e. body and chassis as one unit - monocoque); or
A new chassis or monocoque bodyshell of the same specification as the original supported by evidence from the dealer/manufacturer (e.g. receipt)
And two other major components from the original vehicle - see list below
Suspension (front & back)
Axles (both)
Transmission
Steering Assembly
Engine
If a second-hand chassis/monocoque bodyshell is used, the vehicle must pass a ESVA/SVA test after which a "Q" prefix registration number will be allocated.
N.B Vehicle Identification Check
From 7th April 2003, all cars and some tricycles (e.g. Robin Reliant) that are written off by an insurance company or declared scrapped by their owners due to accident damage will have to be notified to DVLA.
VIC has been introduced to deter criminals from disguising stolen cars with the identity of written off or scrapped ones. The check is designed to help confirm that the vehicle being returned to the road has been repaired following accident damage and has not been stolen.
For further information contact the Vehicle Operator Services Agency Website on VOSA corporate website.
It is possible that by getting confirmation from the Owners club before stating the registration process and then supplying this, together with chassis and engine number photos, you may avoid inspection though , at the moment ,this still seems to vary from office to office.
So, the summary !
If the inspector looks at the car and agrees that it is a steel car built before 1998, and that it is standard, you will receive an age related plate.
If he looks at it and feels it has been modified but within the above criteria it should still receive an age related plate.
If he looks at it and feels it has been modified, but does not meet the above criteria ,but you have documentation that all work was carried prior to 98 you MAY still get an age related plate OR a Q plate.
If he looks at it and decides that the work looks so good that it must have been done AFTER 1998 , and you have no proof to the contrary you WILL be sent for SVA

So I reckon you might get away with a manufacturers chassis as being the same spec.....you will still struggle on the other points though. ran a couple of V8 engined dolomite for a while and that was running a fine line on points....If I'd changed the axle it would have been SVA for me.

Going by what you have say there are a total of 14 possible points as i have only change the engine i have only lost 1 point
The chassis is untouch
The suspension axle gearbox and steering are all standard
So i am sure it still retains enough points

Confused, did I say something that wasn't right?

You can't swap out series land rover axles for disco ones are they are not as originally manufactured for the vehicle (ie a series 2a land rover)

Defender wings / front end makes no difference as you are getting the points for the chassis on a land rover. On other vehicles with monococque you couldn't swap wings unles syou could convince someone it was not a significant change (mini clubman front end to a round nose would be ok from previous experience)

So something like my sherpa engined land rover for instance:

Replacement engine although I could probably convince someone thatwas ok
Replacement axles (range rover) - no points
standard chassis - 5 points
standard box and transmission 2 points
steering - 2 points
its mostly running standard suspension so i'd probably get the points for those as well -

9 points Not a problem, but you can see there isn't much more that can be changed.

would you loose points if yu took the original chassis and had it galvanised?
