Hi new and sad

Hi, i am Steve and i joined today. Wish i had joined earlier as i think my 2001 Freelander has had the dreaded gasket failiure today on the M6.Have had it 5 weeks,35000 miles and full history but the good thing is its still under warrenty from the garage i got it from. The nice AA man took it there for me.Will post with the results of whats wrong with it when i find out.
PS. The 2007 freelander is gorgeous.

Hello and welcome to the site hope you like what you see, Shame about the freelander but you've not done bad then getting such a high milage out of that haha, i am presuming its the 1.8 K series, this is a common fault with these engines which is a shame cause they drive quite well!!!! I have been out in one today at the lro show driffield on the off road course it was very impressive, just a shame they are so low(making lots of grinding noisies through the ruts!!!) brillient in the mud and axle twisters with that traction control. Was very suprised

Well yep its the K series engine but its gone in to a LR dealer today to get put right, To tell you the truth i had a Mondeo before this a Ghia X all singing and dancing, But the Freelander is a lot more fun. And i am quite surprised how nippy it is for a big car with a small engine. I am in the know that the new Freelander is going to have quite a bit of a bigger engine both Derv and petrol

. Anyway just have to wait and see what happens when i get it back.

Well they should be able to fix it they should have done enough hehe, know what you mean i was also suprised at how nippy they are but then i do drive a defender!!!! My Dad has had one for nearly 3 years with that engine and had no probs, its in constant use towing his caravan and stuff so they cant be too bad

Hi

If it's under warrenty and the Head gasket failed I wouldn't accept it back I would ask for a replacement. Less it's the one in a million (or how ever many 2001 Freelanders where made) doesn't just fail, if the vehicle was correctly serviced prior to you buying the thing they would have known about it.

I would at least demand an new engine out of them. If the pistons met the valves then you will get a new engine (not good when valves have a meeting with piston crowns) at least the cylinder head will need replacing due the motor way speeds.

Hi and Welcome. What does the 2007 Freelander look like ? (Cos I will never have one) I want the Range Rover Sport or the replacement for the 110 or series 3

Re The new Freelander, has the spare wheel as a saloon car in the boot,So if you account for the spare wheel on the back door that is the length of the new one, does that make sense? lol.Front aka range rover, at the moment 5 doors only, Two new more powerful (derv and petrol) engines which i wont go into. Erm think i have said enough publicly, I might get shot lol.

hi steve if you know so much with regards freelanders,why the hell did you buy 1.8 its not if the headgasket goes its when,if they did not have such a stupid steel gasket and the thermostat was put in a better place it would be half ok,the other major fault is that its a rover designed engine stuck in a 4 wheel drive car look at the poor old mgf owners with oil and water on there drives and who paid not rover thats for sure as they have no money,and yes i agree there are big plans for the freelander and the defender yes it lives on bless it the ultimate 4x4 in my eyes,the new range rover sport is fab just want to deristrict the supercharged 1 for more fun as at 155mph it wont keep up with my bike!

Tiga that is a good question,Why did i buy a 1.8, To tell you the truth i was fed up with run of the mill cars and fancied something different, Yes i heard about the probs with the K series but sometimes your heart rules your head and we have all done that sometimes.And about me knowing a lot about Freelanders,were did you get that from,I have seen the new freelander in the metal but that does not make me a expert.Yes i would have liked a disco or range rover but from what i have seen or could have afforded,the freelander was a better bet.re your bike me thinks maybe Hayabusa

OOH, I have 1.8 Freelander and am pretty fed up with the negative press that these cars receive, yes there was a problem with the 1.8 engine, but bearing in mind that it is the largest selling 4x4 statistically numbers wise there will be more problems than most ( especially with Landrover reliability ) As for when not if the head problem will occur thats a pretty negative comment I know many 1.8 owners who not had any problems in this respect, its normally made by disco owners who feel superior to the poorer freelander relations. Plus the only people who feel the need to leave comments are those with bad experiences not those with good experiences.

Just for the record I have a 2001 1.8 ES Freelander, with 48K on the clock, no problems whatsoever ( touch wood !! ) its very good fun and surprisingly nippy.

All car ownership is a gamble, and there are no definates that a car will never break down but surely the most important thing is that it is fun to drive.
Mate of mine has a Porshe Cayenne and it constantly breaks down ( price does not mean reliabilty )

hi finnster,i can hear what you are saying but from my angle we normally see 5 freelanders over the weekend with blown headgaskets yes i work at a main dealer and yes i drive a discovery,i never said that they were pants though i have driven all the landrovers off road on proper courses the freelander is a great off road car much to my surprise and others and its only got 50mm difference in height clearance off road than a disco 2 yes its the best selling bread and butter car landrover has and the new super improved version coming next is even better,BUT IM SORRY TO SAY THE 1.8 ENGINE IS NOT UPTO THE JOB. when they have the mod done on the thermostat they rarely blow the gaskets so make sure yours is done so you have many more happy miles in your freelander,you have been pre warned all the best tiga.
