Hi,

Just signed up, as I have recently bought a 1996 Defender 90. It's been modified a fair bit, which I will cover off in future posts, but just thought I would say hello and start with an initial question.

Before that, a bit about myself. I owned a Series 2a for a couple of years, and am reasonably handy with a spanner, having been active in the kit car scene in the past.

Anyway, first question: The 90 is fitted with sawtooth alloys which seem to have wheel nuts with steel covers, which move around a bit, but aren't removable ? I can see that these are pretty standard, but do I just wack a 27mm socket on these to undo them ? Doesn't the cover get damaged in this process ?

Hello.
The locking wheel nut will have a removable cover, the cover is a different shape, flat or domed can't remember.
The nuts rust under the cap and you end up needing a 27.5mm socket!
 
Thanks. I don't think these wheels have been off the vehicle for a while. I will investigate a range of sockets !

Ok, all sorted with no real issues. All wheels removed and refitted (I am used to alloy wheels sticking to steel hubs).

To finish my introduction, what I have bought is a 1996 Defender 90 SW, which 2 years ago had a galvanised chassis and bulkhead, new suspension, updated brakes, new wheels and new BFG tyres. Oh, and a professionally installed Lexus 1UZ 4 litre V8.
It's tatty inside and out, with a fair bit of aluminium corrosion, but drives well.

It satisfied my need for another Land Rover, and scratched my V8 itch, as I have never had one before.

The plan is to tidy up the inside a bit during the winter, then start thinking about what I want to do with the exterior.
On my list of things to do are: cubby box install, sort out leaking sunroof, sort out leaking drivers foot well, possible new carpets, fix broken door trims etc etc.

I will have many questions no doubt.

In case you haven’t got the drift here, we’re simple country folk and are only fortunate enough to have learned our letters in Sunday School so need pictures. We really like pictures…..

Understood. It's the same on a VW Transporter forum I am on - always want to see pics.
Will see what I can do tomorrow, but the weather forecast is dire.
