Hi everyone.I am new to Land rovers and two months ago purchased a 2002 CSW.I love it, it looks great in Oslo blue. I bought it from a main dealer but I have a problem with it that they cannot detect on their diagnostics. When I start it from cold it ticks over at about 1000rpm but when I set off and then stop, the tick over is erratic. It feels like it will stall but never does. This all stops when the engine is up to temperature, then it idles perfectly.
As its under warranty I took it back. They changed injector harnesses
and cleaned the injectors. Its no better. As no fault comes up on their computer they cannot do any more. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Regards Richard.

If it's under warrenty take it back and insist they do more to find the fault, if they refuse start writing letters, give them 28 days to sort it out, if they still do nothing tell them you will have it fixed by a "pro" garage and recover ALL costs involved off of them including all the time you spend sorting it out. Use CAB and good luck!

Thanks for the advice. After speaking to them yesterday they are going to keep my car for a week so that they can identify the problem. It seems to me that when it comes to need a service they will happily change my oil at £100 an hour but when it comes to a problem job they don't really want to know.
The diagnostics have taken a lot of the old fashioned roll ya sleeves up and get dirty element out of it.And also not every fault will be picked up as in my case.Mechanics my @rse!
Richard.

Before you get too carried away threatening the garage, let them have a go at sorting it first.Diagnostic work in modern garages is a difficult issue, most technicians in main dealers dont want to know it as they almost never get any bonus from doing it - whereas they can by doing servicing.Plus the accountants who run larger garages look at the performance of each technician and have been known to lay off poor performers - I heard of one case where this happened to a bloke with 20yrs experience was asked to leave - he was stuck with all the difficult jobs no one else could / would do.Also even with all the correct equipment and training a difficult diagnostic job can take hours of basic checking/testing which is always a hot potato when it comes to invoicing the customer - who goes the loser ?
Granted most Td5 faults are now well known and documented, but there are still odd new faults cropping up.
I tell you its a piece of cake running a garage.

I'm sorry,I understand that it's not easy running a garage, but you tell me if this is the correct way to talk to a customer. My wife took our TD5 back to the dealer where the service manager said to her `You do know that this is costing us £30 a day for your courtesy car don't you!'
There were other customers that looked in disbelief at what he said. When we bought the car, the invoice sheet makes our 1 year warranty £624.It was never an option for us to have this deducted from the £15,000 price so I will take it back as many times as I need to.As for who is the loser? At the moment it's me.

The problem with the fault you describe is that the ECU diagnostics are most likely no help.

I would start by checking the fuel pressure, something the ECU doesn't know, unfortunately. We get a lot of cars with pressure regulators that don't work properly, though that normally has nothing to do with the temp of the engine.

£100 an hour Gee Wizz ouch let go of my arm! I just read something similar to your described problem in an old LRO and the experts answer was the possibility of air in the fuel lines. Might explain why it runs ok when it's warm and purged of air.

When your warranty's up try an independant Land Rover garage I use one that charges £37.50 an hour, may be one of those up near you.

That makes perfect sense!Did the mag mention a solution to it? Thinking about it ,the longer it is stood the worse it is.Where could the air be getting in? Ta very much for that,I reckon i'm in the right direction now.
Richard.

Have you or the garage tryed changing the fuel filter? Also check the fuel pipe push on fittings there is a few around the engine you will find these if you follow the fuel pipes that go to the engine one of myne was not correctly pushed on & i had a simular problem. Also if the fuel injector harness conector has not been washed out & blown out (thinners & an air line) you may still have a problem there. Super chipping a TD5 is what you want when it is running ok

It does NOT affect your warenty as Super Chip works with the OE manufacturers & do not go daft with the amount of extra horse power/torque also Land Rover will NOT be able to tell it has been done. My defender 2002 gained 22 more horses & it is as good if not better on fuel. It used the same fuel towing my 16ft trailer with a Disco on it back fron Essex as before it was chippped with a Range Rover on the trailer but with it been chipped i can keep at a better speed & not loose as much power/speed on the hill's. I can get the chipping job done with some discount if you are interested & if you are un happy it can be removed & a full refund given.

Hi Richard just read it again, all it says is check all pipes including returns or possibly the non return valves in the lift pump are not sealing. This info was for someone with a 200Tdi but the symtoms are very similar to yours. Hope you get it fixed soon mate good luck
