Hi, I have a 51 plate Freelander which recently had the head gasket go. The mechanics have advised it will be more cost effective to replace the engine rather than repair the damage.

They also tell me the cost of a replacement engine (plus labour) will be similar to the actual cost of the car. The car itself is in great condition, it is an ES model so has the Leather Interior, Heated Seats, CD Changer, 5x Defender Alloys. It seems a real shame that it will go to scrap so I wanted to check if someone here was looking for a Freelander to put an engine in?

Any suggestions would be appreciated!!
 
That depends on what damage has been done! If it's just a HG replacement and maybe a head skim and oil rail they're talking out of their arses. £800 max to replace the HG and oil rail with head skim!
 
I'm not an expert so excuse my explanation, there was a hole in one of the cylinders which will need replacing, also the "caps" on the valves were "soft" and would all need replacing. They did a pressure and "lube" test and this exposed the "soft caps".

As I am not fully versed in their language it is difficult to doubt their explanation. I'm at the point now where I can't justify spending the money to replace the engine, what I hope is that someone might be able to fit an engine of their own and get some use out of it.
 
By the sounds of it you have a piston with a hole in it, that means the engine was VERY hot, not worth repairing cos it will fail on something else, go with a recon or a used engine, but get it rebuilt before fitting along with a cambelt kit, it's gonna cost many ££££££££££££,s so dig deep.

Yes, I've been told how much it will cost, that is why I have decided not to get it fixed and to get something new. Do you happen to know of anyone who is looking for a nice freelander to put an engine in, I want to try and find a good home for it before it gets torn to pieces for parts!
