Hi, yes ANOTHER wet behind the ears defender wannabe. Well, if its good enough for Richard Hammond..

After humming and hawing for far too long, we decided to take the plunge this week before a trip to Tiree with heaps of windsurfing kit.

Option 1 is a very clean indeed '98R CSW 300Tdi with recon engine, clutch and s/s exhaust 4k miles ago. Has a front bars and lights, roofcage, dog guard, tow pack, new looking tyres and freestyles. Bad news is £9995 no offers and 119k miles. I suppose the basic question is whether the recon engine is worth that premium.

Option 2 is a TD5, 51 plate Bonatti Grey(deeply cool IMO) with winter pack but absolutely nothing else - we need a roofrack and dog guard. Good news is that its a main dealer car, 52k miles and a pretty reasonable 12,900, which would surely be haggleable..

Hmm, decisions, decisions (very exciting!)

Personaly I would get the 300tdi, better engine easier to sort yourself, less to go wrong in the first place even at 119k but having been reconned, I think it should be good, was it a full recon it got?

It also has more kit.

I agree... get the 300tdi, i'd also suggest steering well clear of main dealers (especially for repairs/servicing) as ive had nothing but poor workmanship at great expense from the x3 main dealers ive taken my 90 to.
Your better off going to some back street family run business where they take pride in their work.

Well..thanks for the advice guys. I have completely ignored it of course!(and Surrey's a bit far from Dundee)

The 300 was mechanically sound but really rather too 'honest' for my wife's £10,000 savings to go into, lots of body corrosion, filthy interior, service history stopped a long time ago.

The TD5 hadn't been at the dealer's long enough to be 'pimped' yet, but was lovely in grey and generally very sound, full SH at that dealer, and went perfectly. Their senior mechanic put it on a ramp and talked me through the grubby bits. The dealer photo was just a sample and turns out it has chequer plate, side bars, towing pack, light protectors, 120A alternator (err, is that good?). But generally it just seemed 'right'. So we bought it! Watch this space..

The dealer admitted that their rate for RR servicing is £100 p/h! A bit less for Defender, but still - I'll be looking for an independent specialist, thankyou very much.

We are going to buy roofbars before we pick it up cos of time constraints - clamps for any guttered roof should work, yes?
