Actually made the time to go to my local dealership today and got a drive of a TD5 Defender they had in (allbeit a 90, not a 110).
My first drive of any TD5 further than moving a Discovery in a carpark, and have to say it was a nice drive. Not heaps more power that I was expecting over a TDi, but it seemed to be much more civilised on the road, I think I would notice the difference when towing though. One major advantage, allbeit a pointless one is the TD5 sounds absolutely gorgeous when on full chat, but much quieter inside when low in the rev range, much less knock, a very civilised diesel engine.
I am infact quite sold by the TD5. The one I drove had 144k miles on a W plate, and felt fine.
Now you can see the problem. After getting used to 300tdi's and then driving a TD5 it is a lot more appealing. Then when you've had an issue or two with it and it's dropped into limp mode for the sake of a temp sensor or summit stooopid (they often don't show up as faulty on diagnostics) it then loses its appeal.
Decisions, decisions.
