I'm pretty new to Land Rover in general but am looking at purchasing one so thought I should get on here and chat to like mined people like yourselves.

I'm planning of relocating to Scotland and am looking at second han freelanders to purchase. I've seen a few for around the £1000 mark an feel these are too goo to be true!

Could any of you recommend a model (discovery, freelander etc) or give advise regaring the purchasing a second hand.

-What mileage should be avoied?
-Are they built to last and are old second han ones a no brainer when it comes to Land Rover's sturdy reputation?
-Is diesel the way forward?
-what models are best?

Any information or your personally experience would be much appreciated and are welcome.

Hey.

Yes, get a diesel freelander, there doesn't seem to be a massive difference between the Rover diesel and the BMW TD4. The head gaskets are more prone to go on the K series petrols so are best avoided in my opinion.

We had a 2006 HSE one and it was a good car, had no major problems in the 18 months that we owned it.

Mileage wise I'm not sure about, I think the diesels are pretty reliable.

Make sure that the seller hasn't removed the rear prop shaft as there are problems with the VCU (viscous coupling unit) that can then cause problems with the IRD (Inline Reduction Drive) which is part of the 4wd system. There isn't an easy way to find out if the VCU needs changing, but a good test is to reverse on full lock and see if the car has any resistance. It shouldn't feel like the handbrake is still on. I think as with most cars service history is important, including a couple of overlooked filters that I can't remember the name of right now.

That should give you enough info to start with, but I think generally FL1's are good cars, we drove to Germany in Sarah's last year without a problem and averaged nearly 40mpg

We are talking Land Rovers here, right? You know why they have such big boots or load spaces? Its to put all the bits that fall off when you are driving along into so you bolt them all back on at home!
The only good thing is that they are so basic you can simply bolt all the bits back on again.

Maybe on the west coast, not in Inverness.................
In saying that even Inverness is better by far than anywhere south of Carlisle for quality of life, you couldn't pay me enough to live south of Perth.

How very dare you! Inverness is excellent. Saying that, I need a large hospital for work and access to the north west coast and Black Isle for day off fun times so it's not for everyone.

I moved for work too, unfortunately apart from the Ness islands and the path through the town used by the river, Inverness is a n industrial dump and quite the unfriendliest place in Scotland I have ever lived.
I can't wait to move away again, preferably back west.
