Hi guys!

So, I'm Jake and I live in Abergavenny, South Wales. I had a Freelander 1.8 which lasted all of 4 weeks before the head gasket went on it.. I've learnt my lesson and that mistake won't be made again! (I'm open to any form of abuse or banter for buying it in the first place...) But those 4 weeks were the best in the time I've been driving! So, looking to sell my 1.9cdti Astra and get another Land Rover!

So, what do guys think is the best Land Rover to go for and why? Preferably suitable for every day use...

Welcome to the Looney zone, there is no banter or abuse here !!!! Mind you a gaylander what else can I say ???? Lesson learnt if you want an every day reliable daily driver the only landy I can think of is a nissan:D:D:D

Aww god xD I will admit I did contemplate a GayLander td4, but came to my senses and am leaning towards a disco but would appreciate everyone's advice before I commit to buying anything

Best 4 weeks of your life...........Driving a Gaylander.............. were you the only Gaylander driver in the village??????

Looks like you are going to fit in her just fine....... Daily driver depends on what you deem to be your requirements and what you can put up with, plus budget......

They prone to rust then? Presuming the engines are more sound than the GayLanders as well? :D

Lol, where you from bud? Could be referred to as English Jake and I could be Welsh Jake? :cool:
 
Im not English im Cornish how dare you insult me haha . Yeah engines are solid in the disco 1 you'll be looking for a 300tdi or 200tdi, 300tdi slight more refined but yeah rust would be the biggest death of a disco normally.

I was the only one stupid enough to buy one without doing the research, 6 months on I'm still hanging my head in shame. Daily drive needs to have 4 wheels, derv engine and I'm happy with that But on a serious note, needs at least 5 seats.. not fussed on tax band, as long as it'll do both intermediate off roading and every day use I'll be happy :D

Either a D2 or D3, haven't seen many D3s about though for off-roading, looking to spend a maximum of about £5k, then do the work to it to get it up to scratch?

All sounds good,

So it would be a Disco , RR or a Defender County SW then . A very wide scope to look at. Unfortunately a hell of a lot of pitfalls as well.

What sort of budget you looking at?

I would be surprised to see a D3 for that sort of money , unless it is completely knackered or you steal it off an estate sale.

D2 , could get you a minter with money left over for toys or a complete basket case that will not last a year unless you want to put half a chassis on it. They are very varied , but be warned there is a lot of rubbish out there. Problem is they look shiny but are rough as a 12 pinter on a saturday night underneath. Search, search and search some more.

Either of the above you will need to put aside a wedge of cash for a diagnostics unit starting at £300 notes.

I know I'm hoping on the D3, but a man can dream :D

I bought a diagnostics not long ago funnily enough! MaxiDiag Elite? Tidy little unit, got it in a sale too :cool:

What sort of toys should I be looking at to begin with? I'm presuming a lift kit, tidy set of wheels and/or tyres, winch, bull bar maybe? I need educating, sorry to be a pain :D:D:D

There is a very high chance that that diagnostics will not work with a D2 TD5 for anything useful.

If you are planning on going off road, then the world is your lobster, if you plan on doing some serious daily / long distance driving then it becomes tricky, as you need your creature comforts.
A good set of AT tyres is always a good start. Winch is not really needed unless you like that sort of thing, some may recommend a tirfor/ hand winch instead. Recovery kit : shackles / ropes / slings. Protection: diffs , steering / fuel tank.

Find some local off roaders / greenlaners as you will want / should go out with others and see what tackle they have.
