The cheap ebay head gasket sets are crap, i got one and only used the stem valve oil seals, they didn't last 6 months you could see they'd worn compared to the original ones that had been on for 13 years, i learnt my lesson.

Make a list of all the parts required then buy good quality ones from an engine reconditioners, go for a payen bw750 hg or the victor reinz mls hg, it may cost more but if done right the first time it won't need doing again saving in the long run.

I got an ebay MLS kit from gasketsforclassics (an ebay seller) last year as they came recommended by MG mobile mechanics and have had no problems. I believe the supplier is the manufacturer and normally wholesale to the trade but use ebay as a handy way to make a bit extra. I used it on my MGF but for the Freelander I used DMGRS. They supply good quality stuff at reasonable prices but the after sales service is a bit dodgy as it is a one man band.

Have you checked out Eurocarparts? I think they do kits too and with the daily discounts are good value.

If you're thinking of changing the oil rail get it from the same supplier as part of the kit. I hadn't planned on changing mine but ran into problems getting the head off so changed it as a precaution however I ended up paying a lot more for it than I would if it had come with the kit.
