Hello, am a newbie, so please go easy on me :D

I will put as much detail into this as possible.

Ok, so my mum bought a Freelander 1.8 petrol k18 about 2 months ago from a garage, he had it for about 2/3 weeks then the head gasket blew, so we then contacted the garage who then told us the car was bought "sold as seen" so as you do contact trading standards, who told us they should offer repair or money back, as my mum really likes the car we went with the repair.

So back it went and took three weeks to repair,
· New head
· Gasket
· 3 oil flushes/coolant
· new water pump
So eventually we got the it back with a hole in the backbox, Didn’t mind as just wanted it back, so the next day my dad took it to put fuel in, and then started playing up, Its ok when cold, but when warm if you put load onto engine it coughs and splutters and starts cutting out, you can rev it very slowly, the garage won’t do nothing now as it was fine when we drove away...
so I got the RAC out to look at it, he checked for trouble codes and found none, checked the spark from the coil all the way to the spark plugs and stayed they were fine, so suggested it was the fuel pump or filter.

So I have replaced

· Fuel pump (new)
· Fuel Filter (on pump)
I ordered a fuel filter sepret as didn’t know one came with the pump but its totally different, but have no idea where it goes,

Ok so after doing that the problem is still there, So today I started around and seen that the pipe from the air filter to the throttle body was disconnected, so I took it all off and noticed this (Pic 1), I then took off the breather hoses and they have some of the gunky stuff there too,

Is this because it was not cleaned right, or has the gasket gone again?

And what could be causing the hesitation?
Sorry about the massive story lol but I hope it helps :)

take it back as it's not fit for purpose. there is a thread on ere. for peeps who've bought a crock of ****e. and believe me Kseries Gaylanders are crocks of ****e.

Multiple head gasket failure is a common occurance on K Series engines.

get your money back and ignopre the garage go straight to trading standards and or small claims court.

Wow what a crock of ****! You've been had good and proper you poor bugger. That's gunk left over from the HGF I'd bet. Though if they replaced the whole head then I'm not sure how that got there. I'd worry that they did a **** job of replacing the head gasket, it's a delicate task that requires care and good quality parts. I'd bet you anything they went with the cheapest ****e they could find just to shut you up. Threaten them with court and get your money back then go and find a good one :).

Failing that it might be worth replacing the spark plugs and giving it a full service just to eliminate the usuals from suspicion. If the HG went then the cooling system needs a really thorough flush.

This is going to be a problem motor until you can sort this out mate. Where are you? Might be we can point you to a trusted mechanic in your area who can help you with this :).

Your problems are probably due to the poxy garage doing a **** job on the head though, you'll probably have alot of damage to undo :(.

I'm afraid that statistically speaking Redhand is right, for the most part the 1.8's are very poor. They have absolutely no tolerance for **** ups or sloppy spanner work and lax servicing which is why they are generally seen as highly unreliable. I won't lie, the K series needs alot of looking after though it's a great engine when it's working. That said, myself and a few other here who are keen DIY'ers and actually give a **** have trouble free ones that we love to bits :). But you'll need to undo years of abuse and damage first and it'll be a long and expensive journey. It's worth it if you persevere :).

Just out of interest Redhand have you had a K series :)? Just wondering don't mean nothing by it.

I'd say that for someone who's willing to learn and doesn't mind getting dirty, the K series FL is the perfect affordable Landy. But for anyone else I'd say stick to diesels.

Had a nosie about the engine yesterday, found that 3 nuts were missing on the bottom of the fuel rail, put new ones on but still no diffrence, also took disconected cat to see if there was a blockage, but still the same,
am actuly in my first year doing mechanics, so dont mind getting dirty,

Also any thoughts on just putting new engine into it?

Cheers

What I'd do is pick up a £250 engine on ebay then rebuild the head with the new LR headgasket, metal dowels and stretch bolts. You could also clean up the head castings while you're at it, flash from the casting can obstruct coolant. Then rebuild the cooling system including rad, all hoses and thermostat.

That's the only way to be sure IMO and if you do it all yourself then that's about £500 which is less than you would pay for another bad HG job.

Or you could rebuild the cooling system with an EWP for your new engine ;). That's what the cool kids do.

I completely agree with that ^^^^^ ;)
