my bitsa is still on the "candles", it's used offroad and as a daily driver at all times of the year day or night, keep the lenses clean and aimed properly and they work quite well (don't forget to clean your windscreen)
with the overdrive my bitsa will clear 80mph and usually is travelling at 60-65mph
my old 750/4 sohc Honda motorcycle (and most of the others from the 70s) only had sealed beam or old style bulbs fitted and most of those were capable of over 100mph and used to thier top speeds
i'm not saying there isn't better and i'm not saying that there might not be more hazards on the roads nowadays, these lights are what i grew up with and driven sensibly using them and concentrating they are sufficient, poor aim and dirty lenses along with poor concentration are way worse than these lights
