hi. i have a 51 reg td4. i took it for 2 new tyres today. after they were fitted, i drove down the road. when i got to about 30 mph there was a real loud grinding from the front of the car and very bad knocking and vibration. The garage are saying that its just coincidence, and the front dif and propshaft are knackered. is there anything that they may have done to cause this.

Swap the two new tyre/wheels on to the other axle & see if the problem is now on the other axle, then you know at least one tyre is dodgy. If it was the front tyres they replaced, also check to see if they've somehow damaged your front brakes by being heavy handed.

the problem is defo with the dif. they said it was locked. is there a manual lock on the dif that they could of put on. the car is not drivable now. the damage happened when i got upto about 30mph.

dont think there is any locks on the diff
but i would def check and see if they jacked it up under the diff or gearbox

there is no lockable diff on a freelander, it uses a vcu in the centre of the vehicle to deal with the 4wd issue.

they would be hard pressed to jack it up on the gearbox or diff without 1st taking the under tray off from the engine compartment, assuming you still have it fitted.

I'm imagining new tyres fitted to the FRONT being the straw that broke the camels back.

Were they fitted to the front?

The problem was with the tyres, the tw*ts fitted the wrong size to the front. 195/80/15 on the back. and 195/70/15 on the front. just trying to get them to pay for the repairs now. but thanks for your help.
