Hi all

As you may have guessed the matrix has gone now, I’ve heard and seen about not needing to take the dash out to do this on my 98MY d1 but it has aircon aswell so is it the same to do or will that need recovering and pulling apart aswell???

Glad of any advice in the endless battle of Land Rover ownership

Cheers

I fitted a matrix to a d1 many years ago, Iirc I did it form the dirvers footwell, brute force and ignorance was used!
A/c rads are normally before the heater matrix, so unless the a/c pipes block the matrix escape route it should come out.

Thanks for that, I haven’t had chance to look at it yet but gonna try find some pipe and bypass it today. Do we have any info on any makes been more reliable than others? I’m getting tired of all these problems at the mo to be honest

Cheers

Oh dear :( There was a tread once with pictures showing the heater matrix replacement without removing the front of the dash.
Access was still an issue the fuse board has to be unplugged and removed plus wiring pushed aside etc etc for what else is in the way.
IIRC again due to access issue the new matrix will have to have hose tails of a specific length (matrix with hose attached) added before fitting to enable the hose joints to be made in the engine bay as there’s no way of reaching the hoses to undo and pull off the existing hoses so they will have to be cut.
Anyway the involvement is a lot less than removing the dash.

Back around the time of the 1990MY RR there’s was a batch that had issues with leaking heater matrix, the repair was carried out by the LR main dealer under warranty and done without the dash being removed, so similar to the D1 now maybe.
I don’t expect much if any info on the RR as it’s before forums, a time when we just got on with what was needed... :)

Yeah it’s just one thing after another at the moment it’s becoming quite tedious to be honest. I’ve seen some have long tails and some have flanges and was wondering why so different, so are the ones with the tails a mod to be able to fit them then?

Do you know if the a/c will need stripping

H i the only heater matrix i know of is the push on hose secured by a hose clip, the reason for the short tail is when the matrix is in place there’s no room to tighten a hose clip, i expect the original in a crimp style of connection, but i never had an dealings in this area.
Web pictures show the AC is a separate item on the heater box, again no dealing in this area.
Once u get access you should see the matrix on the back the heater box according to the old thread on subject.

Just to add, a Google search is your best bet to find the thread I mentioned.

Thank you

I think I've found it, was it Australian? I don't mind cutting and using straps etc. When it stops raining I need to go see wots happening under the dash

I've just been and bypassed it, are the metal pipe ends I pulled the water pipes off an intermediate pipe then?

Cheers
