I was making steady progress dow the M1 when there was a slight judder which I can only compare to running out of fuel. The car recovered very quickly, no warnings, etc.
Then a few miles later, on a hill, the car simply stopped pulling, very little power. On the hill the best I could get in 5th was about 45mph. Pulled over and it sounds as ok as diesel can sound, checked the pipework as best I could in 90mph winds and looks ok. It recovered again and was back to normal for 10 miles or so and then the power went again. I wasn't far from home so nursed it back. It drives just fine, just terrible pick up and performance in general. What I have noticed is that at 3k rpm it comes back to life and drives like it should, any less and it barely moves.

Any ideas on what I should be looking to check before I start looking to get a mechanic to look at it.

Thanks!

Called the RAC out as I have cover, every little helps ;-) Their diags didn't work but then I'm getting no warning lights anyway. A call later and the diagnosis was a sticking EGR valve. Just been shown the valve and it's caked. Checked and diaphragm is ok, just cleaning out and then checking using a vacuum 'rig'. Funnily enough after playing up this morning, car was fine on the way to the garage.

Think the garage is worth a mention should anyone be in Sheffield, friendly and very good value. Smith's Auto Services on Little London Road. They also took care of our dear departed Freelander 1.8 when the head gasket went :) They got it running at a fraction of what a main dealer was asking.

My father had the same thing happen in his gaylander TD4 and turned out to be the injector was leaking. New injector and runs like a dream.

Do a leak off test. It's free!!

The garage picked up an air flow meter error. Given that the problem has come and gone a few times led them to a likely cause as being a sticking EGR.

Now all cleaned up, 125 mile run from Sheffield to Durham and not a glitch so looks like the EGR clean up has done the job.

Good you've got it fixed. :)

If you did the work yourself - have you got your fingernails clean yet?

Filthy horrible things EGRs - not needed at all they are.

That's why loads of us have thrown them in the bin.

Check on here for threads on EGR by-pass.

Much healthier for Hippos to breathe clean air.

Didn't do it myself although I intend to be a bit more hands on in future. I was struggling for time and the guys at the local garage sorted it quickly and cheaply.

I've been reading up on the EGR by-pass, in hindsight would have had a go or asked the guys to sort that.

Slowly learning about the TD4 engine, the Synergy 2 and a new MAF is looking very enticing ;)

The Synergy is good but make sure your injectors are good first as it will blow them if they are not - the increased stress on the injector can be a problem with one that is failing.

Thanks for the advice ;)

I'm actually pretty happy with the mpg and performance as it stands, the TD4 pulls a lot better than I ever expected. I'll certainly do a bit more research before any new toys.
