No to from the 60's
No to being a kit.
It has a modified GTD Chassis, Late 60's engine, Bespoke suspension, wheels and various other bits. Plus a few "original" sourced components such as lights and mirrors, etc.

I would dispute the all petrol comments.
Yes in Mad hat Mans case (which I sympathise) he had the full works replaced. That was for the V6 which is far more expensive than the 1.8
I think he got a bit of a lemon though
Probably the best piece of adivce yet on this thread and most logical reason for the temperamental performance of the 1.8

surely the whole point of most of these posts is that the Hippoo is a design nightmare, badly put together and has disasters waiting to happen - even the TD4 can still suffer from VCU/tyre scrub/Chassis cracking etc etc etc.
so best advice is to steer well clear if at all possible.
If mine was a dog - it came with full service history and a warranty - wot more can yu ask
ask Widget/Aussietrail/Sirus/trewy - all who have had Hippoos and wouldnt touch one now if yu gave it to them.

Point taken MHM, but the V6 and 1.8 are two different scenarios, the v6 has two banks, auto gearbox which is prone to overheating more than the manual.
There are about 70,000 Freelanders in the UK, again as said before to your goodself and others, the faults on here are not representative of the bigger picture.
If someone doses get hgf then its a straight forward fix, assuming they dont warp the head due to overheating etc etc

Yeah, but NI, I think you are missin the point, you ask anyone in the motor trade/ recovery trade what they think of petrol gaylanders and see what yer get back..If you've bin lucky with yer own petrol jobby, nice one. But I think you're the exception. And don't think I'm anti FL's, I love the finnicky cow, but it'll still give you a shedload of grief....

I know only too well, what sniggering remarks were made from the mechanics at my local dealers.
It was in the workshop when the 1.8 hippo had less than 10k on the clock, had a handbrake recall.
The mechanics were standing round asking me what I thought of it,
'she runs fine I said'
They all sneered, saying that 'at around 40k the engine goes'. They were referring to hgf.
Funny that, cos I left the vehicle in with the same mechanics (still under warranty) and told the service manager that the engine was pinking at around 2500rpm.
They said, 'no problem sir we will get that sorted for you'
picked up the vehicle, took it for a test run...........STILL PINKING!
went back again, in my own time, losing a days pay, the MORONS still couldnt get the problem sorted. The service manager said, 'Well sir your car is not a ferrari amd will struggle under laod and up hills'.........MORONS!
Anyway drove for around 6 months with the problem, it didnt pink all the time, just under load.
Decided to check it out myself..........diagnosis, leaky inlet manifold gasket.
Fixed the gasket myself, vehicle was just coming out of warranty.
also, before I fixed hgf I just kept driving for nearly 1000 miles, it was over a several month period, it passed its MOT emissions with hgf, I just cleaned the expansion bottle from all the gunk and said nothing to the MOT centre.
Got round to doing the job after that and thought what was all the fuss about? The worst part is cleaning the gunk from the coolant hoses, rad etc. Not to mention 1/2" gunk in the sump. It was fun scooping that out with a spoon. Emulsified oil and water makes a very good lubricant for the engine.
13000 miles later with the MLS gasket (without new oil rail I add) and it runs better than it ever did

I know that I am leaving myself open to flack but I love my freeloader petrol its my second one. TD4s are known to be better but they also command a premium price because of this and until I win the lottery they will remain out of my reach HOWEVER my old chap has a 300 disco and Im quite fond of the old girl so one day?

edge, i guess its like most motors , while they are running well, we sing their praises,
its only when they let us down and start to cost lots of money our mood changes ,
if the freelander didnt have a history of high cost mechanical failings , it would be a true winner

You've just highlighted my main objection to the petrol FL's NI, that for anyone who's not mechanically minded, these fings are a nightmare..Should never have been allowed out with an engine that is inherently due to self destruct at 40-50k miles....plus how landrover mechanics dare call themselves mechanics, the customer service from landrover stinks.
