Disco 2 Help please.....TD5 fuel problem

Hi all. I have an ongoing problem with my disco td5 fuelling. I have had this problem since I got the vehicle 4 years ago and have intermittently tried to solve it to no avail. Basically, I can't use approximately half a tank of fuel. Once the gauge reads just below the half tank mark, I get trouble starting because of air in the system. Now, if this was a tdi, I would suspect a hole in the in-tank fuel pick up pipe sucking in air when the level drops but, being a TD5, it has no pick up pipe but an in tank pump with a cradle. I have removed the pump and cleaned the cradle and mesh screen around the bottom. It wasn't the cleanest so I was sure that this was the problem but it wasn't. I had a leak at the water sensor at the bottom of the fuel filter which caught my attention so I sorted this believing that this was letting air in when the tank level dropped below the level of the top of the filter but, it wasn't. I am out of ideas now.... Has anyone else ever developed a similar problem and if so, how was it sorted?

Thanks Raywin. I hope it's not a pressure problem. I don't think it is as I only have an issue when the fuel level drops to just below half a tank. I can also drive it to the orange low fuel level warning lamp coming on once it's running :(
 
Yes many people report the same thing, but as you can see at the moment there doesn't seem to be a definitive answer, I would say take care and don't just throw bits at it, injector washers and fuel pressure regulator seemed to help mine and its been OK for a while, I park mine nose down on the drive which slopes and it seems happy. I intend to look at the nonreturn valve on the fuel filter housing when the weather gets better.
By the way if you search there are other threads on this subject.
 
try to drive it without filler cap, if it helps follow the pipe from the attachment it used to get choked where it has that loop pointed then there will be pressure in the tank which can mix up the pump's non return valve then when the level drops the swirl pot can't retain the fuel, might not be that but worth a check cos when i've had similar symptoms that was the problem

Hello All,

The vent pipe that is arrowed in the above picture, does anyone know the part number please.

I can find the part number for the larger breather pipe but not the vent pipe with the loop.

Also numbers 19 & 20 in picture would also be useful as mine have seen better days. Seen part numbers where the square plate is a rectangle with two bolt holes, but not ones like I am after in the above picture.

Mine has done this since i had a new fuel pump. I just fill it up at 200 miles.

This is after driving 150 miles with no pump.
 
With no pump, didn't even know that was possible.

Pump is working fine, but no matter how full or empty the tank is, I always get fuel either splashing up or the pump clicking off, unless I hold the pump almost of the nozzle, far from ideal.

If you can get it started and keep revs over 1800rpm it wil self pump and run with no HP side.
