|I may be mad in this climate but i am selling my Peugeot 206 and am wanting a Land Rover Disco...

I am wanting an R reg as it is roughly in my price range but have no idea what i need to look out for? I know head gaskets are a problem but do i want one that has had the gaskets replaced already (i would have thought yes on that one) and what else do i need to know about them?
Are they alright to fix by myself if needs be? WHat mileage is a good one and how many miles can an engine do... Miles to the gallon, what about Biodiesel etc...

ANY advice will be highly appreciated...
 
Head gasket is more of a problem on Freelander petrol engines, although the diseasals seem to have a better rep.

Discovery on a R plate would be a 300 Tdi (excellent) or a V8 (expensive to run without a LPG conversion).

What do you want the disco for? Planning on using it off road or solely for the school run?
 
No Kids (thank god)...

It will be mostly used for transporting a lurcher and newly acquired 1 year old deerhound but also i am needing to literally be able to throw anything in it, tow with it etc for the weekly trip to our fields etc...

I dont fancy a commercial one as would like the options of putting the seats down or having people in the car as well

How the **** couldn't they knick it? landys are simple to break into
ffs you can climb through the gap at the top of the door on deependers lol
 
Question for ya Ratty, filled up with gas the other day and the petrol station said they shouldn't really sell me gas unless there is a "compressed gas" or "flamable gas" sticker on the car, this true?
 
Asking this as I noticed you had the compressed gas sticker on yer deepender, wondered why until I seen the camping stove lol

as it is built into the car no. Otherwise you would need a sticker saying flammable liquid too. I have mine like you say cos I carry gas bottles in the back.
 
so if I'm carrying a small gas bottle with camping stove attatched to it, do I need a sticker?

You should have really. It is meant for vehicles that carry them most of the time rather than the occasional camper. I have the sticker so that in the event of an accident or fire the emergency services know what they are dealing with.

no. The next time a garage says it to you just ask em if they have the 'flammable liquid' one on their car. They will soon shut up.:p

do you know anyone that can look at landy's with you? You have to have a good crawl around underneath to see how bad the rust is before you buy. It is well worth taking somebody with you to assist.

Ah right ok, only really carry a gas bottle when I'm away to cook and boil a kettle etc etc, don't carry it permanently

what gas bottles have you got in ur deepender?

you should be able to get 250k outta one. On an R reg you will probably be looking at most having 100-180k. Parts are relatively cheap so even if the engine does develop problems it's not a huge issue. It is the rotton boot floor, inner wings, floor pan etc that'll empty your purse and cause it's demise.
