I can not understand someone rubbishing a fellow for wanting to go 4WD. ....................
Hang in there Fielder.
Erm, you're preaching to the converted here mate; no-one has 'rubbished' anyone..... This is LZ; a bit of urine-extraction is par for the course!!
I do remember a friend going shooting and another friend in his then winched up 110 on huge tyres. Well the 110 sank in the mire and the freelander went right across all beit at some speed and managed to go through again and again. Horses for courses.
I can not understand someone rubbishing a fellow for wanting to go 4WD. What is the real objective for most 4x4 people?? Mainly to get out and about enjoying the country-side, to take in scenery that most cannot, perhaps to get to an out of the way place to wet a line fishing instead of being confined to the blacktop. The freelander is more than capable of getting you to many of these places. Not everyone likes to play MUDPIES or go ROCK CRAWLING and the blokes that do would look at us in our Defenders and Rangies and say "Why Bother with them things, they aint got the clearance to do real Macho 4X4 stuff so you see its horses for courses.
Here in Aus we never put sh1t on anyone willing to give it a go, we encourage the battler always and appreciate the determination they have. I have a friend with a freelander that he has put up and over a hill that Series 2 couldnt get over. Has a lot to do with the Organic Matter behind the wheel in most cases, not the vehicle. If Fielder wants to enjoy the country-side then he needs decent tyres, ones with an open tread pattern and strong sidewalls, I should think there would be a selection of All Terrains in UK that would fit and be most practical application for the Lander.
Photo is of the mentioned mates freelander negotiating his way out of a creek bed about an hour West of Cairns, this vehicle has many 4x4 adventures behind it now and the only damage ever was a torn exhaust mount.
Hang in there Fielder.
you in hertfordshire right?
as long as you fit some decent front and rear recovery points im sure the herts lot wouldnt mind you tagging along! and i might be doing some non damaging lanes near there in the new series so you are welcome to tag along on that if you like, may be a good way to bat yourself in and get a feel for the vehicle so to speak, in a less technical and demanding situation
Thankyou Mate, And thankyou for the Photo too.
As storm said, the fact i have my paws on a freelander is pure luck, the 'bargain' car i bought turned out to be a dog, something not even the RAC mechanic who checked it out before i bought was able to for-see and it left me without a car, I was left with the options of taking out a lone to buy a 1.1 corsa or riding my motorbike daily again (not easy, as i am recovering from a broken foot as a result of a bad motorcycle accident in July) My family surprised me by grouping together and buying me a free lander. First because they where cheap, Second because my girlfriend likes them, and third because my girlfriends brother in law (and boss) knows a 4x4 specialist very well and they promised to take care of us. For the record, the HG has already been upgraded, the car is under warranty and the garage have taken really good care of me. They are installing a sump guard for me on Wednesday I am no stranger to working on cars and
So to sum it up, I have a Freelander and it is here to stay, at least for the time being, Now i have two choices, I can put the 4x4 to some use or i can use it just like it was a car and be just as bad as all the school-run mums who use them just to take there children to school. As i dont have
So, thank you for the input from people who recommended tyres and tyre options. All input is appreciated, I think i may need to get my self off to one of these off road centres and get my self some lessons on the do's and don'ts.
Ahh yes, i have already introduced myself to the Herts green lane crew. Thankyou for the offer, where would you be going? I would love to tag along and lean the ropes and introduce myself.
i am not overly sure to be totally honest with you mate, i need to bat myself back in up there, the last time i went laning in that neck of the woods was around may time, back when my 110 was bog standard.
i will dig up the maps and see what i can remember! if not wait a week or so, when i got my 110 back and we can organise a laning trip with the 10. there are bound to be takers for that. i ould imagine max if his 90 is back on the road, booger, jai if his is on the road, spyderman also, classic kev, who knows!
the loops which protrude through the front and rear bumpers are towing points. (Not the loops underneath the bumpers, which are for lashing down the vehicle during transportation).
These towing points are rated to over 4.5 Tonnes and so are suitable for gentle snatch recovery using a recovery rope, which has some 'give'. Do not use it with a kinetic rope or a tree strop, because the forces involved may seriously damage your vehicle.
Glad to see you got through the first couple of weeks...
