Main bearing and subsequent broken crankshaft is a common problem on TDV6's
Some of the engines are developing a fault causing damage to the engine. This 2.7 turbo-diesel TDV6 engine is suffering from wear of big end bearings, those are sticking to the crankshaft and causing the engine to seize. The pressure on the crankshaft is so big that the crankshaft can snap. This is causing even more extensive damage in the engine block. The snapped crank usually still has enough torque to damage main bearing caps.
This unlikely situation is the most extreme as both the crankshaft and engine block are not serviceable which leads to an increased price to repair the engine.
In most situations engine problems are solved by grinding of crankshaft and installing of oversized bearings.
Another possible damage of the engine are scored cylinder liners and bent con rods, this damage to the engine is happening as result of turbo charger fault. Leak of oil from turbo charger to the inlet, build up of oil level in the inter cooler and finally surge of oil to the engine makes the connection rods bend ( similar way as when flooded by water - engine is getting hydrolocked ). The usual symptom of this is misfiring on one or more cylinders. Bent con rods also cause the pistons to score the cylinder liners. In such cases the pistons along with piston rings, the liners and the connection rods must be replaced.
Beware of the cheap chinese manufactured TDV6 crankshafts from ebay.
