HELP NEEDED - MY LANDY IS DYING ON ME

Hi All,

Three weeks ago i bought my first freelander.
Since then i have had nothing but problems.
If i list the issues please could someone advise me on what to do (i had it serviced last weekend and had one advisory - the exhaust has been puttied since the MOT (was not advised on buying it and i wouldn't know what im looking for if i had looked) not sure how this affects the driving of the car???

List of problems
  • on long journeys theres a clugging (when cruising at 70mph) , initially thought it was the exhaust, then the engine and now (it broke down saturday night) the recovery guy mentioned it could be the head gasket?
  • recovery guy informed me that the engine had a huge leak - should this be advised from the service/MOT?
  • the electrics keep going
  • driver side winder stopped working and keeps dropping
  • leak (when it rains) driver side door
  • last saturday night the car was driving fine, stopped for five minutes to drop something off and the car wouldnt start - recovery said battery charge was fine (jump started it) however, after engine had been off - refused to start again (is this electrics / battery / something else?)
im literally at the end of my tether as was told the car was in good working order with a clean bill of health from an MOT - i dont believe all these problems could happen on a healthy car within three weeks?

Did you buy it privately or from a garage? If you bought from a garage I would be taking it back. Sorry you're having so many issues :(
 
Rover you need someone who knows about these cars to give it a thorough examination to identify accurately what the causes are that appear so numerous! Have you a knowledgeable friend who can systematically check through these symptoms! If you lived nearer id happily check these for you! Maybe some member near you may chip in and offer to help good luck regards. Chris
 
If it needed a jump to start and recovery said the charge was ok then it failed to start again that looks like a battery failure and could also account for some of the other electrical issues. 7 to 8 years is probably a good life for a battery kept in good condition so it may just be that yours has had its day.

sadly i bought it privately. I have contacted the guy i bought it from and hes not been the most helpful, naturally. its so frustrating that people just refuse to be honest. :(

thanks for this, the recovery did say it was an old battery as it didnt have the window on it to tell you how good it is (something i wasnt aware was on new batteries) so i guess first point of call will be that .... thanks again

sadly i dont know any mechanics, and i took the car to be serviced at halfords last week and the recovery guy was like 'whhyyyyy' ... ahhh chris thats very kind of you thank you, it would be fab if someone sees this and offers, im at my witts end... i dont suppose you have an idea what the scrap value would be??? as im just wondering whether to cut my losses. thanks again, linzi

Regarding private sale... in general there's not much come back unless it's unsafe and you weren't told, or it's identity is wrong.

thank you... i will do :) well i believe the vehicle to be unsafe - if its a private sale but potentially through a garage as the guy that sold it me was not the guy on the V5, i only found that out when the V5 came through and noticed the address was different, he told me when i collected it that he was selling it as was brought to him as a part exchange? i really do not know where i stand with that???

It's known in the motor trade to offload problem vehicles in auctions. Garages/retailers etc often sell private to do the same, if they're a small outfit or one man band. Search online for his phone number to see what else he's selling, or sold in the past. The relevant authorities would want to know about someone selling private whilst in business. Also if it's unsafe (fire hazard and brakes dangerous) the relevant authorities would be interested. Normally these types of people know how to navigate the rules and do so to cover tracks. Don't use Halfords. Find a proper local garage to check it over for you. Fighting the seller will always be difficult, more so if private. Hopefully it's quick fixes. Unfortunately you have made some mistakes. You should ask to see the log book before buying, and sellers ID. If you don't know about cars/mechanics then you should have taken someone who does, or paid for an inspection like the AA. You could go and see the person on the log book if you have contact details but if he said he was selling for a friend or it's part ex then alarms bells should have sounded.

One of the mods (wears sandles) has merged yer freds together and it's now all safe in the Freelander section.

As Hippo says getting any come back from a private sale is much more difficult but if it is a trader that's pretending not to be anything you can find out will give you more leverage at least.

You've not done yourself many favours unfortunately but Hippos advice is good and all is not lost
 
Could do with a Landy friendly garages register. There are a few threads already but a little disjointed.

Maybe a sticky in the General Land Rover Forum??
Or probably better as an addition in each of the regional ones?
