I agree with jojo - go to any tyre dealer who will give your tyres a 'free' check.

I think a trapped stone or a whopping big screw or nail that is not being thrown out at speed.

Get that ruled out before trying anything else, more expensive to fix. :)
 
Hmm,would agree that this noise could arise from a stone in the tread or having picked up a nail on the road. When I had a noise like that with my Range Rover once I took it to a transmission specialist thinking I had a CV joint problem.The chap had me turn the car on lock a couple of times back and forth in the yard and pronounced "Nah mate, its yer brake pads" -- and it was.
 
it could be either a nail in your tyre a uj or have you had a ABS sensor replaced lately it could be catching on the sensor ring as mine did when I replace a shaft

When you say 'nothing happened' do you mean it still made a noise or it went quiet ?, also were both front wheels turning whilst on the stands ?
 
ok brake pads changed and have had car up on ramp, cv joints etc all fine, driveshafts fine, no nails and no stones but still doing the annoying noise, the garage done a pre mot test to see if they could find anything whilst doing that but no :confused:

Int there a guard under the engine??

Seen several peeps wiv em flappin about lots a different cars even saw one bloke stop and look under his car but they dont flap about when your not movin, poor bloke was scratchin his head t'was on the M5 else I'd have stopped n told him what it was. :)

Also certainly in Mondeo's anyway if the spare wheel carrier and jack are not done up right they rattles like buggery anorl ;)
 
It sounds like something heating up if it takes a mile or so to start performing. It is possible that your nearside brake disc is warped, the pads just about touch the discs and friction produces heat and causes parts to expand, that could cause the disc to make contact with the back plate. It is entirely possible the plate is also slightly bent in, check clearances and bend the backplate out a bit if it looks too close to the disc. Of course that also may lead on to replacing your brake discs in time.
 
did you sort the prob could it be the disc guard rubbing maybe as these get bent on rountine service
 
After months of wondering where the noise was coming on from my freelander , I have at last found out where . After thinking it was from the exhaust and the the anti-roll bar ect... I accidentaly came across the prob at the the back of the ird on the output to the rear diff there is a metal plate unsure what it is but it is loose and rattling , have been trying to find out what it is from google , hynes manual but don't get a proper picture . If anyone could tell me would be great thanks
