1. Go to the Intro area and tell us who you are etc....
2. Give full details on model, year, mileage. Is it FL1 or FL2 .... BIG difference
3. As much detail here as you can about what exactly you were doing in the car in the lead up to the fault appearing.
4. Under warranty? Take it back to dealer and get them to sort it!

its a freelander 1 and its a 2001. the problem has solved itself after sitting for a while. i was driving at 50 and i noticed it wouldnt go into 4th. i put it in sport mode and it selected all the others but no 4th so i pulled over to see if i could fix it and reverse wouldnt engage. so i left it until just now and its working fine again but i would like to solve it before it happens again. would low oil cause the problem?

has it had the fluid in the box changed it should have it change at 60,000

Should it? That's news to me - explains a lot I guess...
fluid change might help if overdue, could be a sticky solenoid , as its a electronic box , not old fashioned hydraulic . read up on fluid change as its not one of the easiest to do.
carlube atf-u works fine in these boxes, and is cheaper than the gold plated rover stuff !

Freelander 1 v6 or Td4?
When the loss of drive happens:
Does the LED next to the gear lever still indicate the correct position of the gear level PRND421?
Does the dash display sill indicate the correct gear lever position PRND421 and SPORT if sport mode is selected whilst in D?
Does it flash F the 4 on the dash when you have loss of drive?
It's possible the barrel connectors which carry the electrical signals to/from the auto gearbox have come apart or are loose. Easy first check. Also look at the wiring harness to see if it's damaged. You could ask the previous owner if there's a history of the fault.

There int no rule stating someone has to introduce themselves. It's their choice to do so and the amount of info they give is their choice if they do. It's a request made and responded to out or politeness. Peeps who come on ere are looking for help. That's how they find us. You never know who they are, and what they may be able to offer in return - expert roofer etc. I joined many years ago looking for information on Freelanders in the same way many others do. When I joined I got loads of crap for being a Freelanderer, having a petrol and the usual bashing peeps get on ere. It's no wonder so many don't post much or disappear never to be bashed again. He needs help. We know how to fix or diagnose things. Many regularly login to help others. It's free and sometimes great entertainment. We should continue this.

Yes we should. But use of the search function can inhibit the need for folk to repeat the same solutions time and time again Hippo. And introducing yourself is a simple act of politeness (especially when asked to do so) instead of barging straight in with no niceties and wanting help.

I did search and never found anyone with the same issue And gearbox and I didnt realise I had to sit at the computer till folk started replying. I consulted a mechanic in a supermarket carpark and he suggested fluid and I will check the other suggestions while im at it. Thanks for all the help.

But if no one asks any questions the forum goes stale and us helpful types can't show our superior knowledge and hippo fixing prowess!
I dont think it hurts anyone to be politely advised of the intro etiquette, as it only helps them not to repeat the faux pas and might well result in getting the help they need a little bit quicker ,as it does get a bit wearing typing a reply that is readily available with a little bit of effort on their part , and I fully realize no one forces you to reply JMHO
