Looking for some land rover buying advice, with my growing family and dog I have been looking at buying my first land rover, I am scared I get stung though as can't afford to make a mistake, I have my eye on 2 and would like some advice, the first one is a 2001 disco td5 xs manual with 178k on clock, and the 2nd is a 1999 disco 2 4l v8 es auto with 89k on clock, both look like stunning examples, but if I make a mistake my wife will give me he'll as our current car is a good runner, looking for advice on these 2 models, including running costs and reliability as I can't afford to not have my car on the road, thanks for any replies in advance, cheers ian :)

Would you be looking to buy these from a Specialist with a wide range of Defenders from £3000 to £20000 inc County Station wagons 90,s 110,s Pick ups and Vans....or not?? :suspicious::mad:

Eh nope that's a mistake I'm affraid, this is my iPhone and this is the first time I've ever been on here, I await your apology for the attitude though

I didn't even know this forum existed till I just googled looking for help with buying a landrover....

That's not attitude.....but you'll learn about that later :p

If you're genuinely not about to sneak in some spam then :welcome2:and I'll go and beat the anti-spam software with a half-shaft.

A post in the Intro section will save you some grief though ;)

Well your not banned which is always a good sign :D

I know about as much about D2's as I do about spark-spitting servers with half-shafts embedded in their inner workings

But I'm sure someone will be along shortly

I had a Disco 2 V8 - complete nightmare. £4.5 k in repairs in 18 months then found out there was a liner problem.

Earlier V8's in Disco 1's and Range Rover Classics more reliable but thirsty. Disco 2 also suffers from terminal chassis rot if you have one old enough.....

Aw that is off putting, both the ones I am looking at look very well kept, I have the fear of massive repair bills and problems though like you did, would you avoid them all together and go for something else? I have no experience with them so know nothing about them

If im being 100% honest and im not bashing landrovers as iv had plenty, stil have classic rr but if your looking for a every day family car, truck the stear well clear of any disco ect, well that is if you want a reliable, cost effective run around.. if you only do the odd bit of green laneing, pay n play ect id go for one of the japs im afraid, I knw il get shot down but a good, pajero, land cruiser, Nissan patrol ect ect are far more reliable and more suited for every day driving...

all the best... n mods please don't ban me!! Hahaha

Disco 2's rear chassis rots if not watched out for/checked/repaired etc. The TD5 178k miles should be no issue if it's been regularly serviced. You can get about 27mpg - less thirsty than the V8 (still sounds good, but never as good as a V8 ;) ) Road tax for the TD5 is £280 - the V8 is more I believe.

I "think" most of the cracked head issues were gone by 2001 and onwards..... I "think"....hope... cry etc. (Mine's 2001 XS with almost 160k on her)

Disco 2 wheel bearings = the entire hub including the ABS sensor wire. Budget for £60 upwards a corner V8 or TD5 no matter. Any play in the wheel hubs = replacement.

Do a search for the three amigos - there should be none of those lights looking at you if and when you test drive one.

ACE system (Active Cornering Enhancement) - some parts are pricey. Does get bypassed by owners fitting a kit or part of a kit to remove the ACE capability (mine was bypassed before I bought her). As does the SLS - the rear airbag suspension sometimes gets converted to coils (mine was!)

Sunroofs can and do leak, but this is equally possible in Disco 1s :D

Have a surf around the Discovery section to see what problems there might be ;)
