Hello All
I need some serious advice - my 1976 Series 111 has a 1990 defender 19J engine fitted. It failed its MOT yesterday for excessive smoke on tickover. IT passed everything else and the examiner went thru it with a fine toothcomb. I am pleased with the rest of the test but not the smoky bit.

It ticks over with an occasional slight misfire. When it mifires there is black smoke, and when it recovers their is some blue smoke. It clears nicely at higher revs. The misfire is also accompanied by a rattle (similar to an injection Knock) last is only momentary. I have tried slackening the injector pipes individually at tickover, and the effect is identical on each one, it nearly stalls the engine but then recovers when tightened. I have cleaned the fuel intake filter at the pump, and cleaned the shuttle valve/ piston assy. The fuel is good and the main fuel filter is new. It had a new head gasket months ago , and pulls really well upon hard acceleration on the road. There are no cooling problems and it always starts first time.

Please can anyone help.

Thankyou

Jim (Derbyshire)

what did the garage say the problem was? Do garages not have experts in them any more?

why are you looking for fuel restrictions?

Black smoke is overfuelling usually caused by lack of oxygen
Blue smoke is oil burning

If the gagage couldn't tell you that I would suggest that they aren't even at amateur level yet.

From what you are describing the fuel pump has been adjusted to allow excess fuel so it pulls better and you have worn piston rings.

Without seeing it in the flesh though it's all speculation. So..........

What did the garage that have seen the fault say it is?

Perhaps someone could suggest a good diesel specialist in the Stoke / Derby area ??

Any Landrover experts available??? Plus ideally people who speak english and have a total more than 3 combined braincells to rely on when out walking their pet pitbull.. ( And reasonably thick skinned. ...)

Fuel pump timing seems ok, injectors swapped for servicable replacements and valve clearances checked. I have also put some fuel (Direct) treatment through it and it only laughed at me. I am a skinflint and have already spent more that £36.00 on this doomed exercise and this is the final stage of the process. Or am I missing the point of owning a landrover? I sold my willys jeeps (The vehicle landrover copied) and wish I had not.

yeah they are a right bunch of spurts!

i think i am banned from ORRP for not towing the party line........ homos

blue smoke is normally oil smoke, so whip the inlet pipe off the turbo and check for loads of oil around the impeller, then while your there check the end float on the impellershaft*

after this check the air filter this can cause excessive smoke when blocked

beyond this take the injectors out and get them checked you may have a drippy one

*do this with a switched off cold engine or you will burn yourself and i will laugh at you

I can see the Landrover sat in the barn from where I am sitting at my cheap PC , and it appears to be rocking backwards and forwards in mirth at my efforts to get it fixed.

I will wipe the smile off its rusty grill when I shove my hand into its internals on saturday morning and say " ok , cough now you pile of S**T "

I am genuinely grateful for any advice and will resist the temptation to shoot the B*****D with my cheap Greek pump action.

Can the possible "over fueling " be turned down simply or is it more complicated ...??

i was in shock... couldn`t help myself.

booked the orchards for the end of september, cheers for the hookup, i would have mentioned the ref came from you but i didn`t reckon they would know who the hell ratty was...

PS

Sorry for using the " J " word .. In future I will describe it as the worlds first true 4 x 4 .

Or "The one before Landrover.."
