Hello everyone

I'm a new girlie Landy owner and need your words of wisdom. I have a Defender 90, 2.2, registered in 2012.....called EVE. It's first service is due in December. A Land Rover dealership has quoted a price plan. A ten year discounted plan price is £6226.41!!! A wee look online shows lots of cheaper options...by about 50%. Obviously I want to protect the warranty so don't want to get her serviced just anywhere. I only considered looking at the plan as I intend to hang on to the defender for years. Is it just a rip-off?

Thanks LB

Of course it's a rip-off!

You do not need to be tied to the stealers!

Now go and introduce yourself in the 'Introduce Yourself ' thread! :rulez:

Welcome to the forum.

There's plenty of independent LR garages out there who will be able to service yer tratter cheaper than the main dealer. it depends on how much you value a main dealer stamp compared to a good independent who specialises in tratters. If you're having major problems with it then stick with the main dealer for now. If not then perhaps get it main dealer serviced for the first year or 2 and then move to independents. As it gets older definitely move to independents. The main dealer should have told you about the allegiance scheme. This provides discount servicing for older LR vehicles so they won't charge list price. Provides service parts, eggsource and tyres etc. Don't lock yourself into a 10 year service plan. You may see sense and flog yer tratter in a years time and the resale value of the plan will be less than you paid. The plan works out at £600+ per year average service cost. They may give it a free mot at the same time but £600+ per year is a lot.

Thanks Oldseadog and Hippo. Yep....I'm not going to take out the plan. I'm not bothered about the dealer stamp and am sure there are plenty of good independents out there

Stick around ere for while and you'll learn how to service it yourself and fix the problems.

As your from Herts, put a post in Hertfordshire lanes thread they might be able to point you in the right direction

Blimey!!! That's prob a bit ambitious at the moment
Years ago I joined and had never changed the oil in a car. I've managed to do the brakes, change the cam belts, change bearings, fix the electrics, fault find stuff like me auto gearbox etc. None of this would have been possible before. Easy things first then work your way up as you feel comfortable.

A 10 year contract sounds ridiculously long and expensive. You don't say whereabouts in Herts you live, but I use a good independent specialist near Harefield for any work I can't do myself.

As others have said, welcome to the world of Land Rovers and the zany environment that is Landyzone, get along to the intro section and tell us all about yourself. Who knows, we might even see you out on local(ish) lanes.

But you still haven't learnt the gallon of petrol and a match maintenance plan, it fixes everything for life. ;)
