Hi there i am currently stripping down my series 3 its the first one i have done and i am not sure which suffix gearbox i have there are a few different numbers on here which hopefully you can see if the pictures go up ok! In the fourth picture it looks like some one has written on the side of the casing any ideas what it means?

any help or pointers would be greatly received

Regards Tom

Number with C after it would suggest Suffix C can you post some photos of whole box from various angles.
Some of other numbers are just casting numbers for the case.

thats what i was hoping but wasnt sure it looks like some one has done some work to it in the not so distant past as alot of it seems pretty good, but there was a loud whining coming from in there some where when i stripped it down the bolt on the front of the lay shaft had snapped and one of the synchro springs had removed itself from its rightful place. Sorry for the poor camera work, do they give any help?

c by the serial number no other number matters ,though till its in bits you cant guarantee many were changed to later suffix previously

Have been asked by a chap to look at fitting speedisleeves to fix some wear issues on a shaft, are they any good ?

thanks for that i will have a look tomorrow after work, i remember seeing your comments and the pictures on Gazzars post about rebuilding his gearbox I know what to look for now! does any one know any good links to pages on rebuilding gearboxes there are plenty of them on stripping them down but not many on putting the whole lot back together, i have the green bible and the Haynes manual but the more i read the more some of it is likely to sink in!

I have read both, but I always seem to remember it all better by doing (I was never a good student at school!) So I am sure when all the new components arrive and I start putting it all back together again and the manuals arnt enough I will have a ton of questions!

I found a rebuild thread on another forum ... (also Gazzar) ...

go by the manual and treat rebuild threads with caution,no one noticed 1st 2nd synchro hub wasnt suffix d whilst the rest of the box was and you dont pull the outer from the inner till both are marked

You mentioned that on a previous thread, I think the OP read that too ...
