56d is a high compression 4.0 Disco motor.
I'm in no rush to fit the engine. If I was to go down the route of complete rebuild on that engine would it be beneficial to upgrade a few bits like the liners you mentioned. I'm looking at a good couple of years before I get around to actually fitting it. But then a rebuild makes sense hopefully I wouldn't be pulling it out for any work for at least a few miles.56d is a high compression 4.0 Disco motor.
A full rebuild would be a must IMHO.I'm in no rush to fit the engine. The head gasket was blowing out the side not on the water jacket still need to pressure test the block? Oil level is fine too. I know liners will not be DIY nor would skimming the head. I'm good with a file but not that good haha I think I need to set a weekend aside and pull it all apart see what it's saying inside don't I. At least I know what engine I have now. Found it funny that JLR parts department didn't know what it was today. If the HG is gone the block must be pressure tested..
The water jacket can crack behind the liner and force coolant either up, and punch through the headgasket or down into the sump, so i'd be inclined to again have it P tested.
Also pull the heads and check the liners are perfectly level with the block deck.

Right gotcha. Thanks for all the advice so far Henry. I'm sure over the next while I'm going to be bugging you with more questions. If you're rebuilding it TOP HAT liners would be a must IMHO and it would be P tested anyway..

Just a question, why replace the liners at great expense of the existing ones are ok? If you look after it and don't let it overheat then it will be fine. If it was going to randomly drop a liner without overheating then it would have done it by now
They're quite bad..Fair enough, i don't think they are quite that bad, but I'm maybe bias as I've got one!
If by fitting top hat liners I can fit and forget then it's one less thing down the road to worry about regardless even if it is expensive the entire engine will be apart so it's the perfect time to do it.Just a question, why replace the liners at great expense of the existing ones are ok?
