help! have i been wound up?

my mate, who knows about land rovers(!!!) has just driven my series 2, 5 miles on the roads in High ratio 4 wd.
how do i know if he has wound up the transmission?
what should I do about it?
what should i call him?

usual symptoms would be ,heavy (ier) than usual steering ,unable/difficult to disengage 4wd ,odd noises from the transmission ,wheels suddenly letting go of traction momentarily ,an almighty big bang !!! as something lets go ,half shaft/diff/transfer box/main box /etc .........chances are if you've got it out of 4 wheel plonk then itll live for another day

to unwind a transmission on a series that a numpty has left in 4wd on tarmac ,either find a convenient untarmaced surface ,field/verge/bowling green etc ,or if none of those are available ,then jack the front or rear of the vehicle off the ground to allow and wind up to spin itself out (be aware if its stuck in 4wd and wound up it can go with a right old pop when it unwinds as you lift it off the groud so keep clear )

ohhh and find yourself a new mate that knows about series landys

i was always told to reverse a car a few hundred yards (in2wd) and this does the same as jacking the car up but is safer and easyer ..maybe im wrong tho lol

Yes, that is the correct way of doing it. Jacking it up when wound up is potentially dangerous, and not recommended. Works though!

If I can't disengage the hubs I put the thing in neutral and push it a few feet, then it seems to work fine. Is this the same "Wound Up" deal?

I've driven Series Land-Rovers in 4wd many times on the road without anything breaking. You need to when towing heavy trailers up very steep hills, which is one of the things Land-Rovers are designed to do.

One of mine towed a bus up a steep hill in 4 wheel drive many yers ago a lot of effort went into getting it moving not just once but three times there wes no damage done at all to the transmission.
