Hi everyone.

Nice to meet you all. I'm completely new to land rovers and was looking for some help.

I want to buy a defender and as I don't have any experience in restoring them, I'm trying to find a clean one with no rust which is proving difficult.
I was given some advice of I'd there is any rust walk away, but is there a acceptable level of rust?

I've seen one that looks pretty clean apart from the windscreen pillar. Is this the beginning of the end or a relatively easy fix for someone.

Really appreciate the help!

Well, it would be a relatively easy fix for a good welder but there is likely to be rust elsewhere as yet undiscovered. Owning a landy, any landy is a sort of commitment that most normal car owners don't have or want. It's hard to find rust free landrovers because they are so rare that where they exist, the owners will not sell them.

it took me 18 months to find my landy it was a long haul but as Col says people are loathe to sell theirs that's why it took me so long they do exist but be aware of the ebay scams they are all over the shop and good luck on your search

edit btw if you know anyone who has good knowledge on landys then take them with you
 
+1 if there's rust coming through, is only time before it gets worse. You can cut out and repair, it's (nearly) all doable, but at a cost.
Check the rest of the bodywork. A bubble in the paint will get ugly in short order, you have to add it all up, how much can you spent, how long will you be keeping it for etc
 
Prices are extortionate at the moment. There are ones with galvanised chassis and the bulkhead (windscreen thing above) already done. They will likely have other issues as there are no perfect ones for sale.
. Try to find one that has battles you can win wether it’s electrical/mechanical/welding.
 
Most old series landrovers are in better condition structurally than many much newer defenders. New defender owners must have conflicting emotions when they see a series on the road. On one hand, they feel superior because their vehicle is more modern and probably looks shinier. On the other hand they must be seething because they know in 10-20 years or less, their defender will be in a scrapyard somewhere, whereas that series will still be plodding along looking much the same.

You haven't said what you budget is or how long you're planning on keeping it. All defenders have or will one day have rust
