Help! Engine cut out on dual carriageway...

Right- I have had a really good trawl through a number of threads on TD% problems but would appreciate some advice!

  • TD5 has been hard to start for a few weeks. Priming away, pump noisy, starts after 3rd or 4th effort if been left for a while.​
  • Today it started in that manner, drove 30 miles and then cut out completely on dual carriageway. No warning lights / faults or anything but had lost power slightly about a mile before. Then would not start at all. Engine turned over fine on starter but would not catch. Half a tank of diesel.​
  • In the past month it has had a new injector harness and been to JE Engineering for a check over. Now pulls like a train and runs very well. Also had new MAF when at JE (genuine LR one).​
  • Recovered home by AA today and their diagnosis based on symptoms was knackered fuel pump. I did manage to start it after it had sat for about 1.5 hrs but it was very reluctant.​
  • No smell of diesel in engine oil that I can see and I assume that would have come up when on the diags at JE if there was an issue there with emmissions?​
I am coming to the conclusion that it is the fuel pump. Am I correct?

Any help much appreciated before I shell out for an OE spec one.

my fuel pump is on its way out, they say there is 2 filters in the pump, but mine is reading wrong fuel level as well so just ordered 1 , cannot be arsed in messing with it and going wrong, guy who owned it previously hasn't maintained it that well, but all chassis and body work are top notch, going through it slowly!!

What else could it be? You said the pump has been noisy...

Even as a newb Disco owner, I don't think there's any warning lights to tell you about a knacked fuel pump :(

Why did you mention the lack of smell of diesel in the oil? If there was, you mean that the head may have cracked?

A blown turbo wouldn't prevent the engine from actually starting in the first place would it?

Could it be a severely blocked fuel filter?

Smell of diesel in oil is injector seals, apparently. No sign of that. Blown turbo would more likely be low power not total loss. Fuel filter was new on purchase three months ago.
 
Can you hear the fuel pump running ?.

You should be able to hear it priming when ignition is on position 2. Stick your head at the rear, drivers side wheel arch.

Yes, it's pretty noisy most of the time. Can also be heard when engine is running. Couldn't hear it today when car died but was working again later. Intermitent fault?
 
No leaks that I can see from pressure reg. would crank sensor show up on diagnostics? JE Engineering did not pick anything up just over two weeks ago....
 
Thanks for all thoughts. I am left with two conclusions, either injector seals or fuel pump, or both? I will try and limp to local LR specialist and get it plugged in.

Also some interesting threads re diesel bug and black crud all over filter base?
 
Did your probs start after filling up , only ask as just rememberd last year I filled my van up on a little back street forcort , and for the hole tank of fuel it ran real sick , hard to start and kept cutting out . Took the next tank of fuel before it ran normal again . Just a long shot !

The Pump would have cut out when the engine stopped. If you can hear the pump I would say it's ok.

From what you describe it's the injector seals they cost pennys and take a couple of hours to fit just make sure everything is very clean when it goes back together. There is a how to guide on here somewhere which I followed makes it nice and easy, think Ratty wrote it.
 
Air bleed valve at the fuel filter - very similar problems and various garages suggested fuel, pump, regulator, etc., etc.. Take the pipe off and check, can be cleaned but my last one disintegrated so replaced it, about £15.
 
Right- had a bit of time this morning and took the fuel pump out. Layer of grey deposit over most of it and much of the plastic gauze filter was blocked. Not a heavy layer of gunge but still not clear. Will refit this afternoon and see what gives. Might look into a new fuel filter while I am at it!

No leak from fuel pressure reg so hoping it is not that.

Have been quoted £200 for the injector seals (parts and labour).
 
That kind of gunge can be an indication that you have dodgy injector seals, basically blow by gas from the cylinder can make it into the fuel rail - probably worth having the injectors out and replacing the copper seals and o-rings.
