Hi Guy,

Need a little advice on the below (can of worms) that I need to jump into. A couple of years back I had a leak between my gearbox and the engine. Believed it to be the rear main seal I dived in , and replaced it. Since then, it has continued to leak ☹. But weirdly there is no oil coming out of the bell housing so believe the rear main seal could be ok.

So, I am thinking it could be the bottom ladder frame leaking or the “tee” seals on the rear main bearing cap. Can I ask for the following advice please:

  • If I need to replace the rear main seal again, or reseal the ladder frame, or replace the “tee” seals can I do this with just removing the gearbox (inc clutch and flywheel). i.e. leave the engine in place in the land rover? Seems that would be the easier way to do it.
  • Any advice on replacing the “tee” seals? Parts needing? Do I need to use new bolts for the bearing cap?
  • When replacing the bearing cap do I need to measure anything (clearance) or just torque the bolts up to the manual? 133Nm
  • “While I am in there” any advice to do anything else while I have the land rover to bits?

It will not be main seal and doubt it will be T seals. Likely it is the block to flywheel housing gasket [ did you renew this when you did main seal?] or oil coming down from the top. 200tdi rocker gasket can be a bit rubbish and or the half moon rubber blocks each end of rocker, in this case the one at the back.

Check the little 1/2 moon seals on the rocker cover at the rear. These leak & oil runs down.

If anything in the engine(t seals or rear seal)gearbox was leaking it should come out the drain hole.

If it was rear main it would be leaking out of that wading hole.

As said twice above, them 1/2 moon seals are dog shti, you need new ones fitted with blue hylomar.

Whereas I agree with the above in terms of likly cause. Looking at the leak you have there, If you are worried about that as a real leak you would be horrified by my tdi. I had to zoom in to the picture to find the leak. Usually when you complain a Land Rover is leaking there is oil everywhere. Not just a single drop on a clean engine!

The 200 in my s2 is as a dry as a bone, 90 one less so!

My 200 looks very similar, but not enough to worry about.
It only seems to get worse when its been standing for a a few weeks and after a good run can be a week or so before it even spots. I just put it down to being a Land Rover!!

Hi Dag019, thanks for the coments... nice to know others have worst leaks. I have my MOT next week and got pulled up last year on my rear diff leaking. Got that sorted but seeing this other leak wasn't sure if it would fail the MOT.

Hi, thanks for the comments, this is good news to hear.... will check the 1/2moom seals tomorrow :)

Hi, yep did replace the ladge gasket... not cheap so hope its not that, but if so maybe not to bad to do. But like you say will check the rocker cover tomorrow and keep my finger crossed its that.
