Hello, ive been a land rover owner since last september, ex-mod 109 2.25 petrol 1980.

Landy has since developed an awful noise when engine braking, sounds like a dinosaur with a sore tummy, really getting embarrassing. I think its coming from the front and have changed oil in the main gearbox, transfer box, front diff and passenger side swivel pin housing, so far no improvement.

There is an advisory on the MOT for a worn front drive shaft but have only ever driven in 2wd.

Grateful for any help, thanks!

Euan.

I had same symptoms on a series three years ago, was water in rear diff, oil level was low also ,change rear oil and see what's up ,my noise was intermittent only downhill free wheeling.

Just because you're in 2WD doesn't mean it couldn't still be your front drive shafts!
What he means is that unless you have free wheeling hubs the drive train is still turning at road speed. That kinda noise suggests the front differential or a bearing somewhere. When did you last check oil levels?

I put what oil i had in rear diff last night, still wants more, theres a neat pile of rat poo on the manifold so i think its been sitting a long while. Will top up everything and replace front prop shaft myself if that doesnt cure it i will see a mechanic.

Thanks for replies.
