Middle one looks real. Other 2 look blingedto sell. Saw that glass sided one on another YouTube video the other day.. personally wouldn't go near it

Nothing wrong with waxoyl or similar if done regularly. But weware of recent waxoyling as it may be done to hide the true state of a chassis... evidence of regular waxoyl applications such as receipts would be helpful instead of the one-off pre-sale dose...

A trader may give you a VIN. Private sellers may be less inclined to do so, especially over the phone or from an email. You can get the registration number more readily, which should give you an idea about a vehicle. You should be able to do an online Hpi check with the vehicle present. It goes without saying though, don’t meet a “seller” in a car park or lay-by away from their home... a trader generally reduces risk but you’ll pay more.

ST04SPZ, Ie the blue 110, assume it has a had a new rear x member?

Wow that would explain new chassis. Lick of paint and Zu alloys I think. £21k, next Defender please.

The prob is, under the skin they are all bags of turd!
Its just some are bags of turd with shiny paint etc.
Even a good one will cost money to keep on the road, you cannot ignore them like you can normal cars.

Just google mot checker, its the GOV site you want, then enter reg and click mot history, and its all there, car dealers hate it! though in their defence some mot testers are utter twonks.

Personally for me, all of those are overpriced, but its your money.

Not a chance in hell I'd pay anywhere near those prices no matter how nice they 'look', over 20 year old defenders for near 20k jokers....check them over very carefully. good luck.

It seems you can indeed polish a turd.

Buy on condition not age.

I would go for middle out of those 3. If I was in the market for one I would go 2002 to 2007. Basically 15P TD5.

Best engines are 200TDI 300TDI and TD5.

Transit not as reliable as older lumps.

Late of an engine worth more than early of next one.

all 3 way over the price you need to take someone who knows the trucks like i did, 18 month it took me to get mine , you should have seen some of the tarted up ****e i looked at with eye watering prices to match, be patient and look look look ,mine just had its mot 3 advisories 1 on slightly word pads 2 seat belt a little fraid cos i keep slamming the door on it:D:D:D and a brake pipe slightly corroded covered in a unknown substance :confused: and mine is 31 years old
decent landys are out there and so are the con artists , so dont be in a rush to part with your mullah and good luck

Hi Everyone,
I'm looking at buying a old Defender 90 or 110. Please don't hate me but I probably wont be taking it off road other than in the snow etc. I have looked on Autotrader and it obviously not buying a normal car as the prices are all over place and more dependent on the condition to a point other than the year and mileage.

I have a budget in mind and would either prefer a newer one 2010 ish or a recent restoration.

What are the things to lookout for? Would you buy private or from a trader?
You've said some reasons why people buy that don't apply to you but not the reasons you are looking to buy. Have you ever driven or even been in a defender? They are crap as a car. Noisy, cramped, horrible to drive. You might love it (cos people are weird), but try one first. I've thought defender prices are ridiculous for years but currently they are insane.

I would buy a Land Cruiser. If I needed one.

But I don't, so sticking with my Mondeo! :)

Now is an expensive time to be buying defenders. Lots a splish splosh add more dosh sellers out there. What ever you do don’t buy the first one you view, having no clue about defenders yourself, from
an owner who did a lot of DIY mechanics you’ll spend the next 10yrs and an significant amount of time and money undoing. Don’t ask me how I know.

As an aside, there isn’t much I can’t do/fix on the old girl now. Which is why I love it.

If the vehicle is to be used in the snow I would say the suggestion of a Land cruiser and an old style Cherokee are better bets. More like a car to dive and both actually superior driving on the road in snowy conditions.
I used to live in the west Highlands and I would pick a old style Cherokee over a 110 for getting around in poor road conditions anyday.
I'll get mi coat:D
