hi my rangy will not start,
it developed a missfire sunday whilst green laning it was left on a slight bank ticking over while we recovered another disco and it concked out, it restarted but was missing at 1000-1500 rpm only so switched to petrol and it went a little better and just about got home,
i swaped the plugs, coil ,its already got new leads, dizzy cap ect,1000 mile ago

could hv been damp in the dizzy so squirtrd a little wd40 in there and it was better then it back fired and now it will not go,

checked it tonight it has a good spark and wilst trying to start (didnt fire once) it flooded its self, i removed the plugs dryed them and tryed again still no fire and the plugs are wet again, im i missing somthing obvious here?
or have i just flooded it and need to leave it to dry out?

Take the dist. cap off, pull the main HT lead out of the cap. Holding the lead in a well insulated pair of pliers, about 6-8mm away from the brass wiper on the rotor arm, get someone to momentarily flick the engine over. There should not be any spark jumping across, if there is, the rotor is tracking HT voltage down to ground and is faulty. I fitted an aftermarket rotor years ago and after about a month the car ran like s**te. After much hair pulling it turned out to be the rotor reducing the voltage to the plugs. Fitted a genuine (Lucas) rotor and problem disappeared.

gr8 stuff,
i will try this tomorrow, one thing i did do when i put a new rotor on was put a smidge of grease on underneath as the old one took some getting off and it was a little corroded, Fingers crossed.
im sure this all started because i threatened to sell her!
many thanks

Also, if you have access to a timing light, check that the timing is still correct, I have known these to go out slightly and cause the vehicle not to start. Nylon teeth on timing gears wear and can slip, distributor clamp loosens off and causes movement.

If the rotor & dizzy cap aren't genuine parts you're wasting your time until they are.
When you pulled the rotor off did you press on the reluctor (the pointy thing under the rotor arm)., If you didn't you may have disengaged the auto advance/retard mech in the bottom of the dizzy. Check by rotating the rotor arm with your fingers. When released it should go straight back to its original position.

just swaped the rotor for an old one out of the shed, cleaned the grease off of the shaft and she fired up straight away no missfires runs better than it did before! it must be that because i have now put all other origional parts back coil pulgs ect and she if purring,,
many thanks for your help that is the last thing i would have thought of as the rotor was new a couple of months back, i will take it back to the landrover supplier tomorrow to see what he says, gen, lucas or nothing from now on that for sure,

That's good news.
I learnt from experience, the same as you have!
Generally, the old 3.5 is bomb proof, provided you keep on top of regular servicing.
Loads of spurious stuff out there, but when it comes to ignition components, dizzy caps, rotor arms etc. always use original spec. and manufacturers. Higher price-yes, but less hassle and grief.
Good luck and thanks for keeping the rest of the forum informed. :):):):)
