Hello everybody,

I'd like to introduce myself and maybe ask for couple of tips along the way.
Me and a good mate are preparing both of our defenders. Once the pandemic situation is a bit more stable for travel we are going to embark on an ambitious journey.

Overlanding from the south of Italy all the way to china.

first things first, we are preparing our vehicles for the job. my beloved is a 2001 110, which I'm doing some internal and external mods for, given such a journey lays ahead.
(he has a 2004 td5 90)

It's rather stock I'd say, first thing I'm planning on changing is the suspenion, given these are the old original ones from two decades ago. Honestly for strutting around the farm and all of that it's great, but for overlanding I'm thinking of a decent upgrade. so here comes the first question, what do you guys recommend? maybe a 2 inch lift? any specific brand? old man emu kit? (I must admit I love the look of a slightly raised defender) (for such a long time that will be spent on daily basis with this vehicle, I justify to myself that some indulgence is therefor allowed)

any tubing and hosing needs to be done? I just changed the turbo tubes because I got them with the kit for blanking out the EGR valve, which is just done. not a lot of noticeable difference I must admit but I'm happy the engine will run cleaner now.
the next thing I am considering is a straight through downpipe, make the old girl breathe a bit better.
and lastly an upgraded intercooler, like the bigger one from AlliSport.

ok no, maybe two more things after this. A remap and/or a Nanocom. anyone have some experience with these ?

ah yes and also I notice my ECU is pulling in some oil from the sensors in the crank case so I'm going to sort that out as well.

I'm fitting some sliders and protection all around the vehicle as well, as we do not shy away from some tougher tracks from time to time.

the second part would be the interior. I've removed all passenger seats. now only the two front remain, and built myself a compartment system, which is currently in next to me here in the kitchen waiting for it's second layer of primer to dry. I will post pictures of this when it's done and mounted in the car.
same goes for our route and travel plan, I'll limit myself to questions related to engine and car performance in general, at least for now :D

anyway yeah so I'd like to know what you guys think about must have mods for an overlanding journey. I'm pretty sure the car would do it dead stock as well, but I love looking into mods and researching and getting the most out of my vehicle. I did a lot of the same mods to my motorcycle and it ran much better after, so maybe that's a reason while I'm attracted to the thought of upgrading as well.

Hi and welcome!

Nice looking defender! It’s the best vehicle for the sort of trip you’re doing. If you have it as standard as possible, it makes it easier to get parts in other countries if something breaks. Heavy duty suspension or updated suspension would probably be better than lifted suspension as it wouldn’t raise the height of the vehicle on corners and off road but would retain the same height. Steel wheels rated to take the extra weight would also be a good idea, such as Land Rover wolf wheels.

There are quite a few blogs and websites where others have shared their experiences. Well worth a look.

Good luck with the trip. Let us know how you get on.

Hi there and welcome
If you need your job for a specific purpose, then customise it to best meet your needs :) just remember the more specific you make it. The less good it will be at other things eg, more power comes with less economy, more lift come with worse handling etc
