Hi guys and gals,

I'm on the hunt for a Defender 90.
I've been offered one and would welcome any views on it.

Its a 1993 Defender 90, pics below.
111k miles
MOT till December
Getting a really good price.

I've always wanted one, just not sure if this is a good one.

Welcome:)

looks like a nice one for that age on top.

but the main thing to look at is the condition of the chassis. Tap it with a small hammer all over you will hear it. Rust is the killer.
It may have a few leaks, as long as they are not excessive then it’s standard. But obviously none is better.

Mechanics are all doable, for the average joe.
A chassis change can get expensive and time consuming, although still doable.

you don’t mention what engine.

good luck, but don’t let your head rule your wallet:)

1993 should be a 200tdi, the bonnet is wrong for starters so I think is the fuel filler position. Check the chassis number matches the vin plate that should be on the servo box.

Also check whether you can get it insured, it's heavily modified and most companies won't insure it.

Actually looking at it the bonnet is probably right but there's a few bits that definitely aren't.
If I were you I'd be pretty wary that its all legit.

It has a aircon front panel with TD5 intercooler and rad the door hinges are TD5 and besides the wings and back body being TD5 the bulkhead vent seals are stick on.
If that is on the bay of fleas it wants reporting...

Also the OP comes from Bradford... Say no more...

Personally, I would tend to give anything that looked to have had the attentions of the "orf road" brigade a swerve. A standard vehicle that has had road use only tends to be in better nick, and gives an inkling as to the mindset of the previous owner.

Also, as stated above, that has the look of a bitsa, which can mean stolen parts, dubious vehicle history, or other issues.

111k is a very low mileage for a 26 year old vehicle, which might indicate foul play as well.

Assuming you have the reg no., I would check it carefully on the various websites, see what you can find out about the relation of the numbers that are on the vehicle, VIN, chassis and engine numbers, etc. and it's MOT history over the years.

Interested in what you consider a "good" price? It is 26 years old, and appears to be on an ungalvanised chassis, but heavily laden with cheap aftermarket parts. And with a very short MOT. For me, well worth avoiding, or at any rate very careful research before parting with any money.

My 1992 200tdi had 252000 on the clock and still pulled like a train.
The OP is a novice on the defender side so best take somebody to look at it that knows a ringer if they see it. Tbh that can be easier said than done with a vehicle like a landrover but there are things that shout out at you. The money they change hands for now is not chicken feed so be 100% sure of it before you mortgage the house to buy it.

That was exactly the point that I was trying to make. The mileage is extremely low, which to me raises suspicions that it has been clocked, or has the speedo from a completely different vehicle in it.

In fact, Defenders are not selling for nearly as much as they did a few years ago, when the hype about production ceasing was in full swing.
There are plenty around, including some on this website, for sub £5k.

Yes I know what you mean but the ones that haven't been messed with are getting pretty rare and we all know that mileage is a thing best taken with a dose of salts:D
However to have completely the wrong body is a bit of a give away but not necessarily to someone who sees a defender shape and thinks they're all the same.
