Hello all!

Not "new" to the forum as such. I joined up earlier in the year, then promptly forgot about it! Anyway, I am here now, so here's a little bit about myself:

I am 24 and live in Baughurst, a small village in the middle of a triangle between Reading, Basingstoke and Newbury. There's no shortage of landies round these parts although I don't personally know any owners.

I own a 1986 Land Rover 110 (those were the days between Series III and Defender I believe?) Station Wagon. Its my first Landy, but certainly won't be my last. Unfortunately the previous owners(s) were not Land Rover fans and didn't bother with keeping its maintainence up. As this is my first landy, its also a steep learning curve.. but I'm loving it

I do have one issue which I could do with help on though. I have trouble starting the beast on a cold morning. This is I think to do with the glowplugs being too cold? are there any "home remedys" that can help me solve this problem? obviously there is the age old blanket-over-the-engine option, but are there any more reliable options? maybe a small lamp/heater in the area of the plugs 10-15mins before i start up?

Hi and welcome to the loony zone we have quite a few members from your neck of the woods. (do a search for tossers!)

I take it your 110 is the 2.5N/A diesel? if it is the secret to starting it is to hold the key over till the glow plug light comes on and then hold it there for 20 seconds. then start it. but don't press the accellerator pedal down at all until she fires up. then a quick blip will have it running no problem.

Indeed it is a 2.5N/A. I actually held it for 30secs this morning to no avail :(

take em out and connect 12v across them - they should glow red fairly quickly - if they dont throw them away and buy new

only way to keep yer block warm is to keep it in a heated garage overnight or fit a block heater such like wot this is kenlowe hot start on eBay, also, Other Car Accessories, Car Accessories, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 11-Dec-07 19:37:42 GMT)

i've got exactly the same one in mine and it's fine, well apart from the fact that it's takes 3Kw to run it
 
Cheers for the advice there Sean, purchased some glow plugs today, will try them at the weekend. They've not been changed for as long as I've had the landy (nearly 3yrs) and I very much doubt the previous owner changed them, so they're probably due a change anyway.

It weren't an insult do a search an you'll see what I mean. it stands for "The Old Sodbury Sortout Evening Ramblers" I think!! and is the name of a group of you suvverners who frequent this forum and do quiet a bit of greenlaning round your neck of the woods.

Good lord! what HAVE I got myself into here? haha

Edit: right, newbie question here:

I have just gone out to have a look where glow plugs go (my usual landy help source, my dad, is in australia and he has my bloody hanes manual, so i'm guessing here) and I think i sussed it... but could some body confirm for me please? A photo or a diagram showing the location of the plugs would be lovely!

Also, is there any set procedure to changing the plugs? or literally just undo them with a spanner, take out, put new ones in and tighten them up?

Gripper: thanks for the offer, once this thing is running I would me interested in 'laning with you lot.. i think! :/ haha
 
if you pop the bonnet and stand on the drivers side looking over the wing. on the cylinder you'll see what look like four spark plugs with a wire attached to the top of each one then heading to the next and then the next. etc. they're your glow plugs.
