Hello from Cyprus

Hi guys,

I have received a 3 door late 300Tdi Discovery that I have been fixing for the past months. I have gotten lots of useful information from this forum and I will be asking even more in the distant future.
I just wanted to say hello and thank everyone for their contribution so far.

Welcome to the zone.
Warm weather, no snow, no salt on the roads - yup it shows.

To be honest, I had almost any other problem besides rust, so I did not have to deal with the usual problems of other discos of this age. Cosmetically it was in great shape and had never been off road before.
Now after a transplant engine and a complete service of almost everything under the bonnet we are looking forward to some more improvements in the next couple of years. But first this landy must earn the money already spent on her by towing a heavy boat trailer up hill in the hot summer and keep its promise of not blowing another head gasket or melting its pistons.

By hoping that if I keep buying her gifts she will also treat me well, does anybody have a good suggestion on the best place to install a rear view parking camera monitor?

Hi and Welcome. You are in one of my favourite holiday spots. My old Disco 1 had the Camera mounted just above the tow bar in the bumper. Very handy when towing to see if you remembered to put the jockey wheel up!!!!!!

I was hoping that I could put is over there, just above the tow bar, so that I can both reverse the car right onto the trailer and stop hopping on and off the car like I have been doing until now. My only worry is that it might be too low to be useful for parking in tight spaces. The most logical place would be on the plate (which would be off center).

For the monitor I am thinking mounting it on the ceiling between the light and the mirror (and hoping it would not fall while off roading) and also move my madman EMS over there as it is a little distracting checking it next to the diff lock lever.

By the way, I have tried to measure the engine oil temperature from the sump, and I believe that the reason I am getting unreasonably low temperature readings (20-30 degrees below coolant) is because the welder who made a brass fitting, made it so large that I am actually measuring the temperature of the aluminium casing instead of the oil. As it is becoming difficult for me to source a much taller VDO temperature sender, can anyone suggest a viable alternative place for measuring the engine oil temperature (oil filter, galley) or suggest a mail order shop for a really tall temperature sender?

How big is the monitor? You may want to install in on top of the dash in the little centre tray. The bracket for my CB radio fits in there quite nicely, for example.

Heavy boat trailer, steep hill? Low gear and/or low box

I still have not got the monitor, but I am thinking towards a 7 inch 4:3 monitor, so it should be around 200X140mm. I thought of making it stand over the centre console when I want to use it (like I do with a gps) and for the rest of the time either have it folded it or hide it in the glove box.

The other option is creating a frame and mount it on the ceiling, or finding from a scrapper a roof console panel that would fit and cut it.

I certainly need the low box just to take the trailer out of the parking place. The problem are slopes on the highway. Prior the complete overhaul when it was still very sluggish, sometimes it would drop to 65km/h on the highway on long hills, while with a 1.4TSI Tiguan I was able to maintain 100-110km/h when towing a 1600kg trailer. Hopefully lowering speed to 80km/h (and after the amount of money I have spent on her it owes me to only drop from 100 to 80km/h) and turning off the air-conditioning to not stress the engine, while praying that the cooling system will not lose its coolant and fry the engine again, might do the trick. I no longer care about speed, nor feel bad for withholding traffic, I just want her to stay healthy and take me fishing
