Hi everyone
I am a new member here and just want to say hello. I am the (now poor) 18 year old owner of a blue 1996 300tdi defender 90. i have always come to this thread but just recently made an account with the hope of possibly lowing my insurance quotes. i bought this vehicle in December with the plans of it taking a little while to get ready, however i have done to much work and its now finished. at the moment i only have 1 years driving and i am wondering if anyone knows where to get cheep insurance. im not willing to pay such a huge price just to drive her for a year when with that i could buy a series restoration project.
thanks for any tips
regards Ben

Welcome to the LooneyZone mate :)

Get some decent security they are easily nicked and will reflect on your premium if it doesn’t have protection. A thatchman Immobiliser, wheel lock and pedal box lock are good options many use.

Shop around extensively for quotes. I was quoted silly money for my modified RR - I nearly gave up :( When I tried Admiral, just by chance, they quoted me 66% cheaper than best quote I’d had all together.

Adrian Flux associates with this Site, perhaps they can help a member? Worst they can do is give you a quote. Don’t give up just keep searching ;)

Yep security was my number one thing to do to it it got a pedal box and a steering lock but it has a home made key immobiliser so obviously not rated would you recommend one? Unfortunately tried Adrian flux because of there 4x4 insurance and was unfortunately told they don’t insure under 24s which is something I heard from a number of companies unfortunately certainly will keep looking although at this rate I’ll probably end up with a Suzuki jimny to get around in for the next few years not that I’m complaining if I can’t have a Land Rover that’s the only other car I’d have.
Thanks for the reply

They should insure you for a Jimny but they are crap until modified which will cost you big bucks again.
Maybe Sorn your Landy in your garage, get a <1000cc car to earn no claims then spend what you’ve saved doing your Landy up ready :)
Exactly I’ve looked at an insureance for a jimny and it’s £50 more than what my current car wold be and I have no interest in modding it. And yep the landy will be sorn for a few years till my no claims are up and besides with the money I’d save I would be tempted to stick a galvanised chassis on her. I only want the jimmy because I won’t break it on the green lanes where as my current car an all wheel drive 2005 Suzuki ignis has has its fair share of green lanes despite it being a car and has the body work to show. And I’m not to worried about the jimny not being particularly capable it’ll teach me good skills if I can get that places then I can get a landy to even harder ones

Welcome to the forum!

Again, not sure if they insure new drivers but I'd give Grove & Dean a call. I've been with them a few years now and no one can ever beat them on price. I pay £150 a year for fully comp with breakdown cover and that is after being honest with them about an engine change/upgrade.
Worth a try anyway.
Good luck

^^^ I’m guessing you are not 18 :D

Defenders hold their money, storing one you have/love won’t lose you anything. For the price of a jimny I would keep the ignis till the wheels fall off and spend the money on the fender. Couple years you will have a really nice one that will last and be worth few Bob. Jimmy will cost you arm leg and kidney be worth squat in end.

Well the jimny has been given to me free by my grand parents who can’t get into it any more, so I can hardly complain at that cost and don’t have anything to loose on it besides I bought it at 14 to drive around the farm in and it’s a pretty good little car doesn’t come near the defenders but equally I’m much more willing just to floor it in the jimny because i don’t care for it like I do the fender. the ignis will just go sorn to and parked out side the defenders garage door to make sure it doesn’t get nicked

Yep they were the second cheapest company how ever £1800 is still way out of my price range.

£1800!! F**k!
I get that younger drivers will have higher premiums because of risk, but surely prices like that just encourage certain people to drive uninsured and take the risk causing everyone more risk of losses.
Suppose the other option is the named driver route on a parent or others policy. No no claims clocking up, but once you're over a certain age they Dont make much difference anyway if you're on something like a specialist/classic policy.

My premium didn't change not using 10 years of no claims and havin 9 points to all points coming off and using the no claims.

But no, I'm not 18 anymore...and haven't been for a while. Still feel like it though:p

The main reason I got low quote was the fact they took into consideration 19yrs driving no convictions, no points or never made a claim. Ever on all 3counts. Over 25 you can get good quotes on clean slate.

When I was 14 I had the Defender for the farm like your Jimny. I had to let it go even though I loved it as when I passed my test 4x4 insurance was out of the question. I ended up with a F reg Micra 998cc insured for £1200 for the first year. First quote was 3800-Norwich union ‘quote me happy’ be f***ed! was 4yrs til I had another defender.

Was it worth it - yes ;)

That’s the thing that is me as a named driver they want £3200 if I’m the policy holder and the thing that annoys me the most is I’ve been suffering from a black box which means I can’t drive after 11 and before 4 I can’t drive for longer than an hour and even though I’m better than 97% of other drivers at getting a good score they still want to make me pay rediculous prices

Well the jimny is only £650 to insure £50 more than the ignis so I might aswell even if it only lasts me a year

For £50 I agree. They are a bag of ****e mind if you are used to a proper farm fender.

No such thing as globalisation or black box back then. We had carbs - they are great :)

I’m sure if you are a great driver, as you say (most 18yr olds say that - is why they insist on black box), Mam or dad would have you on their insurance.

Your black box telemetry will be in your favour if you are a safe driver.

PS - supporting your vehicle on breeze blocks is dangerous and likely to get you killed!!!

Suppose £3200 is not that much for insurance considering the £1000’s you have already put in since buying it a few weeks ago. Must have taken long time. How did you set the tracking with those wheels?

Don’t worry to much it’s only the axel on the blocks the chassis is supported further back with axel stands I was replacing the springs and shocks and bushes. I estimate I’ve probably put £750-£1000 into it on top of the £5000 I bought it for. She’s a sound machine even for her mileage. And I haven’t set the tracking yet still trying to figure out a way to do it. But they came with the vehicle caused a few issues with the wheel carrier and I’d personally prefer wolf or standard rims but for the moment they do me fine. On the subject do you know what they might be worth they’ve got BFG AT KO1s on 265/75/r16 with less than 3,000 Miles.
