Just bought a well looked after 02 TD4 Freelander.
Came with a bill of £300 for new discs and pads.
Had to stop on way back from buying it as front brakes practically seized on.
Gallons of water later, still wanting to bind so continued journey hardly using brakes.
Is this common, possibly because of new brakes (shouldn't be surely?), or Freelanders prone to it?
Much thanks in advance.
Lee.

Sounds dangerous bud.
It needs to be sorted or looked at by a professional before driving ideally.

by professional I mean not the guy that let you drive away like that!
If it was bought at a garage - take it back and demand they sort it for you as a safety aspect
or take it to a reputable indie that will sort it properly. You can’t skimp on brakes you need them

New discs have a ‘shine’ put on them as they are generally cast and will spoil with even air moisture (Like when left standing). They don’t have much braking effect until this wears off, same for new pads til they ‘bed in’
Sticking on is not good, they could jam and cause an accident and best case driving it with them on will damage them irreparably in a short amount of time
If you know what you are doing - check your callipers sliders/boots/pistons&seals.

Be safe ;)

It sounds like your calliper pistons have become corroded and then pushed back in to enable new pads to be fitted, this will make them very tight.
Cheap fix remove new pads, remove piston boots and carefully pump pistons out to expose corrosion without pumping the pistons out completely then remove corrosion. Clean before reassembly
Expensive solution is fit new Callipers (Recommended)
Good luck
