I had to leave the AA because I bought a motorhome which they would not cover for recovery because it was 3 centimetres too long for their recovery regulations. So, after 50 years I changed to the RAC because they will cover both Disco and the MH, both in UK and Europe, but I have not had need to use it -YET!

That's odd, the last time i checked the AA standard relay has a 3.5t and 2.3m wide restriction but no height or length restriction.

I checked specifically because i was worried the ambulance wouldn't be covered.

That was about 3years ago so I'd better check in case it's changed.

My mistake - it was the width restriction Not the length. It is way past my bedtime:rolleyes:
 
Update - still at Newport Pagnell or whatever it's called. I've exhausted all the QI videos on YouTube and am moving onto humorous cat videos. Supply of Jaffa cakes is running perilously low.

Re: the AA I am a little disappointed with my experience today. There was 0 attempt to do any kind of fix, or even to pour some steering fluid in to see where it was leaking or if it would work... In 2010 my v8 disco had a fault with the fuel pump. The chap from the AA stayed with me well past the end of his shift and we pulled the pump out, drilled a hole in the top and rewired it to bypass the faulty connection. I have always used them because of that one mechanic but perhaps he was the exception, not the rule.

It's getting late but if the Jaffa cake situation gets unbearable we could try an emergency call out :)

Experience of all the breakdown services seems to vary wildly, sorry you've had such a crap day :(
 
I am in Queensland Australia and had to call out the RACQ as my Ford F250 would not start and run when I stayed the night at a Motel in Toowoomba and as it was on LPG the mechanic knew noting about the system . I have Ultra care with the RACQ and he said as It could not be fixed within 24 hrs I could get it trucked where ever I wanted. I live in Bundaberg which is about 450kms away. The racq arranged for a truck from about 20 ks away to come and measure the ute to see if he could fit it on his truck and it came in at 5.2m long and his limit was 5.5 so he loaded it up and took us home got home about 7pm that night.
very impressed with the service.
 
Just got home. Literally 12 hours to get me from Heathrow to Kettering. That would be good value in the 18th century.

Oh god, that must have been terrible - having to spend a night in Toowoomba for no good reason.

I had to live there for 3 years!

Just to add to the flavour of how my day is going... I called the AA at 1:30 from Heathrow to take me to Kettering. They picked me up at about 3 and I was dumped at the services in toddington on the M1 and told another truck would pick me up. An hour later another truck took me to the next services on the M1 (Newport Pagnell) where I am now waiting until 11:30 for a third truck to hopefully take me home to Kettering.

Do you still have to pay if it would have literally been faster to push the damn thing home yourself?

IME. the AA will take a polite complaint seriously. You can up the ante as required once you can get higher up the food chain so to speak....

Some of the other providers outsource the work in some areas - One area we spend some time in is only covered by the AA as the AA - the RAC send a local firm - and having had experience of them via friends, we decided to stick with the AA. I am sure that, like most things this varies wildly throughout the country. Service is only as good as its staff :(

I blame employment law - something about a requirement to employ human beings :D:rolleyes:

I remember hearing about that.

When I first arrived in Toowoomba this had happened the previous day... https://www.thechronicle.com.au/news/it-has-been-40-years-since-ruth-and-allen-stillers/2893479/

And then over the next few weeks I had major problems moving around South East Queensland with water everywhere.
