ok Guys, stupid question time, i am on my second freelander 1, had the last td4 s for 10 years great vehicle. I recently found a very low mileage td4 hse (55 plate) which i could not resist. All the toys work, unfortunately there wasn't an operators manual. Any way there seems to be some sort of heater/emission control unit which continues after the engine is turned off, smoke emanates from nearside. Local fuel station thought it was on fire!! whatever is operating comes with a suction type noise. What is it and how is it controlled thanks!
 
fuel burning heater - auxiliary coolant heater



Thers a temp sensor in the front grill area. When the ambient temp drops below 5 degrees'ish it turns on and heats the cooling system up quicker

thanks guys that will be it, mine does not quite smoke that much. Can they be switched off?

anyone know where i can get a user manual for the HSE
 
shouldn't be smoking that much, if you have a gap IId2 they can be turned off, but they should only come on when it 5c or below, it's an engine heater, lowers diesel consumption as it helps warm up engine. You can get a set up whereby they can be used as a parking heater. There are threads on it on here.
exhaust should be under front wheel well

Why pull the fuse on the FBH. It was an expensive option for a reason. I can't see the point in disabling it. I've actually installed a remote to fire it up before I leave for work and an adjustable controller for it too as I think 5°C is a bit cool for it to kick in. I've got mine set to fire when the outside temperature is 7.5°C. This gives me nice hot heater, when the outside temperature is is still cool.

thanks again... as i haven't a HSE operators handbook i don't know how a lot of the extras work. I have had it a few months and like to have an understanding of how things work and how to turn axillaries on/off ........ next I need to get my head around the rear parking sensors, and how to save radio stations on the sat nav head!!!

The IID doesn't work on the Freelander 1 unfortunately. :(

The HSE handbook is the same as any other FL1 as far as I know. The FBH isn't actually mentioned in the owners handbook at all. This is because there's no user controls for it, unless the Webasto timer or remote module are fitted. LR supply a Becker audio handbook the nav HU, however most people bin the Becker these days as it's well out of date by modern standards.
