still working my way round this site but i'm getting there I want to know what that symbol acually means (the book with an exclamation mark) my heaters take too long to warm up and sometimes they dont,so far scarf and gloves are the answer but i want raw range heat (p38 4.0 2001 hse)

As 1spin says - put it in the Range Rover forum and when you get there learn how to use the search function. There are all manner of reasons why you have no heat. Most popular are airlocks and blend motors. Since airlocks don't throw the book symbol on the screen my guess is you have at least one failed blend motor or at least the flaps which the blend motors drive are stuck. Both very common and both require a fair amount effort to rectify. Worth getting the codes read so you know the size and scope of the problem.

im getting round the search thing on here. the book symbol only appeared once and does not appear any more i recently had a diagnostics test that came back clear. if air block is the issue how can i expel it ( is there a bleed valve any where?)

Easiest way to bleed the system is top it up slowly with engine off until it reaches the correct level. Make sure the little pipe from the top of the Rad to resovior is clear. Disconnect it and blow through it if you are not sure. Keep the cap off and start her up. Get someone to hold the revs at around 1500-2000 RPM and then top up as required. Once she begins to warm up it replace the cap before it starts to over flow. You can try squeezing the top hose to try and expell any trapped air but I have never found I needed to do it.

If you haven't had the car too long then I'd suggest that you check that the heater hasn't been bypassed. A previous owner might have had problems with the core or maybe the 'O' rings and done a bodge.
