Hi all,
I have just noted a little bit of antifreeze spill on the carpet of the drivers side on my P38. Can also now smell when engine is running & heater is on.
I know it's the dreaded matrix o rings, GRRRRRRRRRRRRR

I have been quoted by independant Land Rover garage £200 to supply & fit as I'm not sure if I can do the job myself I have heard it's a real pig complete dash out and proplems with seized screws.

Is this a good price, any advice please

It's probably worth it to be honest. I did mine a few months ago and set out to go by the short cut described on Ranagerover.net. For me this procedure never worked as the screw holding the pipe clamp was seized and impossible to drill. I ended up pulling out the dash.....twice. The second time was because it wasn't the 'O' rings that was the problem but the heater matrix.

Thanks for the advice, everbody I have spoken to say the screws seize up. I think for the sake of £200 I will let somebody who knows do it.:)

Try and get an agreement from the garage that the £200 is a fixed price. If it's only a quote and they run into problems then they'll charge you for the extra labour/time to sort it out. That's why it's always tempting to have a go yourself.

I had to do this not long after getting my P38, went for the "easier" method instead of removing the dash.
Took best part of a day as well as most of the skin from my knuckles, was cursing the hell out of the range rover most of the way through but glad I got it done...if you do try it yourself make sure you have some long screwdrivers!

I had same problem and its a cow of a job .Instead of just relacing the O ring i renewed the matrix as well but tested it before i put it back in and found that the rings were not sealing as the cut out in the new matrix was not deep enough to allow the rings to seat properly.
Also drying out the under carpet where the antifreezze had soaked in took an industrial vacume cleaner set on blow for 3 days

done mine as per rr.net, 4 hours and 2 euro for the rings, had a right angle drill from lidl that done the job, put back a hex head m5 thread if i remember correctly, not a huge job, go for it

i think i need to change how much i charge to do them looking at the cost above, i change plenty of them and only charge 90 quid. the last one took me 2 hours, all you need is a long screw driver, no need to drill or brake any plastic panels.
